Wanted to get a cheap pay as you go mobile internet dongle to keep me connected whilst travelling. Did some research on the web and decided Vodafone had a competitive deal. I also expected to get good service from such a well-known global brand.

Tried to order online but they can only deliver to the card address not my work address. Fair enough, I understand the need for security. I therefore ordered online and selected to collect from a store.

Couple of days later I went to the store to collect my item. Experience in store was disappointing. Shop staff were scruffy, no one seemed to be wearing uniform, I couldn't tell who was a sales assistant and who was a customer! After waiting around I got served, produced my ID and left.

When I got home I found the sales assistant had forgotten to give me my SIM card so the device was useless! Pretty frustrating as the shop is quite a distance and it's not possible for me to easily call back in.

I tried to call the branch on the phone number on the paperwork. This number didn't work!! I then waded through various pages on their website to try and find a phone number. After what seemed like an eternity being put through to different people, calling different numbers, explaining my problem time and time again, I finally get through to someone to explain.

I'm told that I need to visit the store. I tell them that it's not convenient for me and ask for them to post a SIM card. I'm told no, that is not possible.

I phoned back to speak to someone else and was then told the only option would be for me to order a replacement SIM on the vodafone website.

I order the SIM, the SIM arrives but it doesn't work properly. I go through the rigmarole of trying to get hold of customer service again... call the number on the website, enter my mobile number, press the option to speak to someone, then get a recorded message saying "this number has now changed!".

Eventually when I get hold of someone they tell me I have a mobile phone SIM and not a data SIM. (I don't understand why they can't just switch things at their end - although I'm not a mobile expert so maybe this isn't technically possible).

Customer service and people skills were zero. The person on the phone didn't give a hoot. Apparently it's not possible for them to post a data SIM card out as they only have mobile phone SIM cards centrally! Amazing. I get transferred to someone else who may be able to help only to be told to go back to the store.

Not one apology. What is the point of a customer service team if they can't actually help or even seem like they care!?!

I think I'll just bin the dongle and go to another network. Life is too short and I can't be doing with the stress.

One tip - Avoid Vodafone! I will never use them ever again!
