“Sudden failure and refusal to start”

★★★★☆

written by 323Murphy-Alt on 27/07/2016

Bought this to help with some flooring I was laying a couple of years ago. It worked fine and was well worth the outlay as it saved me lots of time in completing the job. I have used for several other DIY tasks over the last year and was using to dismantle some cladding from a shed roof when the tool suddenly stopped and wouldn't start. Having fixed many electrical appliances over the years I felt sure the fault was minor as the tool had not overheated and there was no smell suggesting an internal fault. If you are not competent to work on mains electrical equipment, please seek help from a qualified person Checked the plug, fuse and cable then with the tool unplugged I opened the caseing. There are about 10 torkx type screws to remove and the case can then be pried apart, there is a small hole on one side of the casing that facilitates this. Removed the mains wire from the connector block and released from the cable clamp. The whole motor and electric board can then be removed for inspection. I checked the on off switch for correct operation. Looking on the web I found a common fault was the crimped connection from the coil windings to the motor board. There are four of these two visible when you open the case and two hidden underneath. Having removed the whole unit, it just lifts out complete, I was able to inspect the crimped connections. I decided to solder all the connections and found that one wire had become detached. Needed to carefully scrape the insulation with a scalpel, tin the wire and add a short piece of thin wire to remake the connection. My metre then showed a connection between each of the four connectors. Rebuilt the motor into the casing and reconnected the mains cable. When complete I was able to start the motor and the tool has worked for over an hour today finishing my task. Pity the connection is so vulnerable and would really benefit from a better connection in a device that generates a lot of vibration resulting in stress on this connection

“Don't waste your money”

I have had this tool for 2 years used for a short length of time overall. The tools just stopped working. Dismantled it to find brushes not worn out but in poor condition a small carbon disk from god knows where. The control board was dead not even worth mt time repairing it as I do have the knowledge to do so. Averall I would not recomend this to anyone. I thought Bosch was a resonable quality brand, but its rubbish. Save your money and but a brand like milwaukee,marketa etc.

Very simple method of changing blades using a socket head screw. The machine failed after only a week of light use. There is an intermittent electrical fault on the motor. Not impressed by this german engineering

“Disappointing ”

Had mine only 5 months, only used for light work a handful of times and it just stopped dead, checked fuse which was good, no obvious signs of damage to brushes or anything internal! Very disappointed for such an expensive product

“Rubbish”

written by on 15/10/2014

Got this tool as a birthday present October 2011 I only use it for light DIY and as such have used it 6 times at the most, having said that on those 6 occasions it was great but after such light use it has suddenly stopped working. No burning motor, no loose wires ( nothing obvious ). Have to say I'm not impressed, it's an expensive tool to be throwing out after using just 6 times but I think that is where it is heading. Also recently had a Bosch jigsaw fall apart at the quick release blade holder over £30 for the replacement part and that's fitting it yourself. Bosch used to be a brand to rely on but I will steer well clear in future. Don't touch this tool.

Only used a few times before it died. The only reason it gets a 1 star rating is because there is not a no star option.

“Less then 30 hours of light sanding and cutting”

★☆☆☆☆

written by flogni on 23/02/2014

I have used this tool over a period of about 12 month a few times, cut some tiles, plastic and light sanding. Never for more then minutes. Already dead! Most accessories not ever used. Nice tool to use if it works. The air slots are in the wrong spot - exactely where you tend to hold the tool. Get one from ALDI for $40! Bosch is now the same "quality" as all other tools - and I have used BOSCH products religiously for 50 years! No more

“Failed failed failed!”

written by Malenyboy on 10/07/2013

I bought my PMF 180 E in June 2011 and have used it four times. On three of these occasions the motor stopped working after only a few minutes of light work. The last failure was a week ago, I emailed Bosch Australia but they have not responded. I have given up sending it back for repair, I will buy the Ozito equivalent (my son has had one for 3 years and it has never given any trouble). Take my advice; buy Ozito, buy quality!

“after 5 minutes normal use the tool is in the hell”

written by on 29/01/2013

5 minutes during normal use of the tool went to the hell without any prior signal. It's died. I packed it up first time, it was brand new. I threw it out because I do not want to see anymore.

“Don't Don;t Don;t Buy it”

written by Techie-John on 31/05/2012

My wife got me one of these for Xmas 2011, in April 2012 the switch broke and Bosch collected it for repair. Four weeks later I got a letter from Bosch telling me it was beyond economical repair and to purchase a new one, I bought it from Amazon uk and it came with a 2 year warrantee, but he house, this is useless as Bosch seem to decide what is covered, and using it as a tool dose is not covered by them, I am disabled so it had only been used a couple of times, for small jobs around so much so I still have the original blades that came with it, also check out the price of the replacement blades they are very expensive. I have loads of tools and always bought Bosch, but never again, they even want me to pay for the return of the stripped down tool that they say I have broken.

What on earth this review is for, God only knows ! It certainly isn't for a Bosch PMF180E tool, as nowhere in the world can you buy one for £37.25 ! If I were Bosch I would sue Review Centre for defamation of a PMF180E's character !, it is a fabulous tool and if you havn't got one, GET ONE- NOW.

“Failure”

★☆☆☆☆

written by starglider1 on 03/09/2011

I bought this tool to remove grout between bathroom tiles, using the appropriate segment saw blade. The tool stopped working within a couple of minutes, so I switched the mains suppy off and left it for a few minutes. It was then operational so I figured it may have over-heated and got on with the job, periodically switching it off to permit cooling. After about an hour, it failed agaon but this time for good. Opening it up, I was impressed by the quality of the motor within. Testing showed that the fault was on the speed regulator printed circuit board but nothing obvious (like the triac). Having seen some other online reviews, like on this webpage, indicates possibly (in my opinion) either a poorly designed circuit or there is a poor quality component on it. If only it had not failed, I would be singing its praises as a useful addition to those who use power tools.

I have bought three of these, one for my son, one my son in law and one for me. Had to send my first one back (stopped working). My second one has stopped working and now my son in laws has also stopped working today! Blades are expensive, blunt easily. I cannot understand why they have stopped working as I follow the instructions, I have not burnt the motors out. As far as I am concerned they are not fit for purpose.

Bought mine in Europe when working there and really love it.

Have found this an important part of my tool box and really find it useful in a lot of difficult jobs.

The sanding and polishing facility is very good and makes the tool worthwhile in its own right. The extraction system is good for getting rid of the dust too.

The blades are expensive, hard to find and seem to blunt easily - but it beats most of the alternative ways of getting the result. There are more places offering them and the prices are getting more reasonable

A little bit better like a box of teebutter. Absolutely useless and after one hour of normal usage this "powertool" is dead. I can't recommend for anyone.

“I bought the Bosch PMF 180E Multi on a recommendation...”

★★★☆☆

written by Iain G on 19/03/2010

I bought the Bosch PMF 180E Multi on a recommendation from a local hardware store after I had gone in looking for something that would cut mitres on some new skirting boards I was fitting to a refurbished room in our house.

After listening to what I was looking for, the dealer produced this product and proceeded to show me how it worked and with its multi-function capability it seemed like a good choice and despite the price tag of £69.97, I bought it.

With its circular cutting blade it cut through the skirtings relatively easily, but if you want it to cut in a straight line you need to be careful and don't assume that because its a broad flat blade that it will cut straight on its own!

The result of that was that I had to use the apex sanding attachment to get some of the mitres to join correctly and that was a somewhat laborious process.

Using the Apex sanding pad showed a weakness in the tool - if you don't use it flat on the surface of whatever it is you are sanding, the sanding pad will heat up and soften - destroying its velcro backing rapidly. After little more than 3 hours of use I had to look into buying a replacement pad.

The Supplier (Longhorn Hardware) proved to be useless in this respect. They didn't have a spare pad in stock and weren't prepared to order me a replacement unless it was part of a larger order from Bosch and therefore wouldn't commit to letting me know when a replacement would arrive -useless!

However, on line, I discovered Toolchestdirect Ltd who were the most reasonably priced of the online stockists for spares the PMF 180E and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them on price and speed of getting the part out to me.

However, even at a price of £11.99, I'll be unimpressed if this replacement sanding pad doesn't do a lot better than the last!

Stevebaker's Response to Iain G's Review

Written on: 07/10/2010

I found this review not helpful because unfortunately the reviewer was mis sold the PMF 180. This type of tools is not appropriate for cutting mitres on new work. Sure it will do them, but cutting mitres 'freehand' with this tool is unlikely to be very accurate.
<br/>
<br/>For mitres, one should use a mitre saw. Multitools like the PMF 180 are more suited to cutting underneath the architraves etc when laminate flooring for example.
<br/>
<br/>Also, prolonged cuts are not what the PMF 180 is designed for.

Potentially a useful tool, however, the cutting bits blunt easily, are expensive to replace and can be difficult to obtain. A bit of a white elephant product.

I found this review not helpful because it lacks specifics.
<br/>
<br/>The PMF 180 is in no way a white elephant if you need to plunge cut a socket box into the side of a kitchen cabinet or remove a section of skirting boards that are heavily fixed to the wall!

written by on 19/11/2009

Found Product blades blunt very easily and quickly, poor selection of accessory blades included. Got this in the sale but would be very disappointed if i had paid full price for it. Has its uses but could be better, i used it to try and cut under skirting boards and it ended up with be ripping them off anyway as the tool took forever and went blunt. Could be better and if i knew it was like this would not have bought it and saved myself the money.

I found this review not helpful because using it to cut the bottom of many, many metres of skirting boards is optimistic at best! Its suited to vertical cuts to remove sections of skirtingboards or the bottom of trims, architraves etc.
<br/>
<br/>Skirting boards should be removed when fitting flooring underneath.
