I purchased my Compaq Presario 2500 laptop from a relative in 2010 and it's still running. I've dropped it, punched it in frustration when losing at games and installed and uninstalled countless software. It's still running. Admittedly, it walks rather than runs even with very simple tasks. I've installed a free and very efficient and light system called "Puppy Linux" that gets the best out of old systems like this. Even then it's still a struggle, for example, I have to load an old browser and view Facebook in mobile view, loading the standard view will freeze the system for ages. But for things like listening to mp3s, typing documents and light web browsing, it can still do a job. Playing video files - even avi or x264 files - is a struggle. I agree with other users who noted that the graphics card was reasonably strong in its own time but never really showed its potential. The hardware itself is sturdy, the fan is still going strong - it's noisy, but for me not as noisy as some others suggest - and the DVD player has been replaced twice. Everything else is as it was when new. Yes, it's heavy. This is not a laptop you actually want to move anywhere if you can help it. In summary, if someone has a working version of this sturdy hardware for free or single-digit prices,and you need a system to type, act as a server or play music on, then this can do the job.

“Not as bad as others may say it is.”

Okay yes, this is not a lapt5op you can use any more. But I found one lying in my company office the other day, and I have made a good use of it now. After using Windows 8.1 or Mac OSX this laptop is nothing and best to throw away. But ever considered Ubuntu? Yes I was able to convert this laptop into my personal home server. Ubuntu Server works fast, and this laptop can handle the load too. I have my movies and a lot of other things added to it.

got it back in 2003 for 1500pounds lol!!!!!! the battery dont work no more, good screen, very big, the hps are good now and seem to of got the battery thing sorted. wouldent buy this thing now its to old!!! buy a dell or acer there good

Overall compared to the new 2008 computer line of laptops this computer ranks at the bottom with all the rest of the 2003 models. If you are looking to find a good computer to start off with maybe for college or just to get used to having an inexpensive addition to your office or home this would for sure be a great buy! Used computers of this model can be found still on websites online and or at auctions. If wanting to purchase please do not spend more than a few hundred dollars.

I will suggest you not buy this Compaq Presario 2500 laptop at any cost, only the screen display is good in my opinion. It's really one of the worst laptop i have found. Worst Keyboard i have seen on any laptop

Compaq Presario 2500 is not top of the line, but it is an advanced mid-range portable computer for its time.
It comes in various configurations with Celeron and Pentium 4 processors up to 3.06 GHz, CDROM/DVD/DVD+CDRW Combo drives, 14" and 15" monitors and up to 1G RAM.
Full featured versions have all kind of ports such as USB, IR and FireWire. It provides connectivity with most of today's available devices.
This notebook has a good design, all controls are in the right place and it looks impressive and luxurious.
JBL built in speakers giving an nice sound for their size.
There is a mini-PCI slot in the notebook, in some versions it contains Wireless LAN.
Built-in display adapter has 32M of shared memory and ATI Radeon Mobility chip.
Monitor has a small viewing angle and a long response time, but it gives a sharp image and great colors.
This computer comes with Windows XP Home or Professional editions, drivers and some software.
My computers comes full featured with all possible ports and 15" screen, it has an Intel Pentium 4 2.66 GHz processor, 512 Megabyte of RAM, 40 Gigabyte hard drive and DVD+CDRW Combo. It consumes up to 90 Watts of power.
Such a computer can run all of available 32bit applications on the market, and it runs them very well.
Most modern 3D games like shooters or simulators will not run on this computer because the display adapter is too weak and hasn't got enough shared memory. Only older games will work good on it. Most of older 3D games and strategy games should work fine on this computer.
Also, this notebook provides a lot of heat, in room temperature of 28-29 Celsius, the user should think about additional cooling, especially if he plays games, because this computer heats up a lot! There is special plate with fans available in the market that can provide additional cold air to the cooling system of the notebook, it is a good solution for warm countries and gamers. If you are buying one, pay attention that fans of that cooling device will be in the correct place, otherwise it will just disturb the work of this computer's native cooling system and it will heat even more.
The Compaq Presario 2500 is a great portable computer for all modern office works, programming and etc., also it runs most of strategy games and older 3D games.
It will still last you for a good few years. There are still available new computers of this model in the market, as well as used in the second hand market.
It is really a successful model, made with a good quality and provides today's needs of a portable computer.
I would recommend such computer for students, office workers, software developers and for general domestic use.

I would agree with all of the above - mine has given me a few years of reliable service with no problems. My only little niggles would be that (in my personal opinion) the built-in speakers are not all that good, and also as the previous reviewer mentioned it does produce quite a bit of heat, therefore the fan is on for a lot of the time and is not exactly quiet!

<br/>I have lugged mine around the country for the last 2 or 3 years and even dropped it a couple of times, but it is still providing sterling service. I rate Compaq as a brand-name quite highly and this is a very good laptop.

this computer (laptop) is really good...we bought this in 2004 and now it is almost 2010 and i still use it like it's new.and right now i am tiping this comment from this laptot (presario 2500).but yeah what i dont like about this laptop is the battery that doesn't last long and that it only has 27 GB hard disk.i use this computer almost every day.i don't use my normal computer because a lot of other people go on it aswell.so i use this laptop as much as others use there normal computer.but the best part is ,that it is a 5-6 year old computer and it still works.but for some reasons this last year i can't instal antiviruses because they cause problems.but thats now this last year, but before i could instal antiviruses (when it was newer)i am on this laptop almost all day and everyday and still i have no problems
