I was in two minds whether to get a conventional or smart tv. Also, this was our third choice smart TV model (the others being sold out). However, I can only guess our initial disappointment was a blessing in disguise, because we are totally delighted with this product. The BBC iplayer is great, the You Tube feature is great, the social networking is brilliant and I really like the easy functionality. And as an added bonus, because the TV has built in freeview and we are happy with the Toshiba on demand films etc which we can get through the Toshiba Places app which comes with this TV, we are saving £15 per month through no longer subscribing to cable TV!
The jury is split on the Toshiba 40RL858B Full HD 40" LED TV, reviews are definitely mixed, although there does seem to be more good than bad. Over on CNet the technical views suggest that the sound quality is a little below par, however many current users are disputing that, and many saying they are more than happy with performance. This is a 40” LED screen with an excellent price tag - keep in mind that prices on LED’s will come down a little as 3D television and Plasma takes popularity.
However what cannot be overlooked is the amount of technology that is crammed into the Toshiba 40RL858B Full HD 40" LED TV and we are certain it will make lots of users very happy. It is a full high definition television set meaning it has 1920 x 1080 pixels and being LED it is well backlit, giving images crisp clarity. The set itself is finished in silver - and although it is just an optical illusion this light frame seems to add to the brightness of the image. There is good connectivity to the internet with Toshiba’s Places Internet TV Platform meaning you can access catch up services and much more. The remote control is well thought out as are the menu systems, making navigating around becomes intuitive and natural.
The gripe with the audio is that distortion is possible at higher volume levels however not everyone seems to experience this. In theory sound quality should be impeccable as the set features NICAM stereo speakers and Digital Noise reduction technology. Connections are good - there are 3 HDMI ports, 1 scart and 1 SVGA - which means you can also use the set as a PC monitor should the need arise - added versatility is always a good thing to have.
