The Jaguar X-Type is an entry level luxury compact executive car produced by the longstanding British firm since 2001. The X-Type is the smallest of the current Jaguar saloon cars. The initial version of the X-Type was a saloon. In 2004 an estate version came on the scene, only the second ever Jaguar estate car and the first using a diesel engine. The Estate came with a choice of four engines, a 2.0 litre direct injection diesel and 2.0 litre, 2.5 litre and 3.0 litre petrol engines The X-Type is equipped with 192 hp (143 kW) 2.5 L or a 227 hp (169 kW) 3.0 L Jaguar AJ-V6 engine. All wheel drive patented Jaguar Traction 4 system is standard in the US and optional in Europe. There is no diesel version in the U.S. 2007 models continue the iconic muscular Jaguar styling with some new standard features. The saloon receives stability control, for example. Both 2007 X-Types are powered by Jaguars 3.0 litre DOHC V-6, which provides 227 horsepower and a top speed of 140mph on the V6 option.
The X Type's four-wheel drive system is tuned to send 60 per cent of engine power to the rear and 40 per cent to the front wheels, delivering a reputation for great road handling.
