My mother spent her last months in the Old Vicarage. She was a very old lady, losing her hearing, losing her sight, finding it more and more difficult to find things to enjoy in life. The staff at the Old Vicarage were excellent, they were able to make her smile, they made her feel part of something - and that is so important for someone in her position. They were quietly positive and caring, dealing gently with the indignities of old age. There was nothing impersonal about the place, and they did a good job of finding things to like about all their charges. I wouldn't be able to do it nearly as well as they did. A Carehome is not the solution anyone wants - what everyone wants is to get their youth and health back, but I thought the Old Vicarage did did the best that could be done. The food was good but un-exciting. Much better than hospital food. They are cooking for a large group of people and it has to be OK for diverse (and very fixed) tastes. 'Exciting' is I think not possible.
