“I push the limits in paperless office environment. I...”

written by on 16/02/2011

I push the limits in paperless office environment. I am a CPA and scan EVERYTHING clients bring in, which as wide of variety of documents as it gets. I need to archive and move through documents FAST, and did so happily with Paperport Pro 9. After 5 years of heavy duty use, I thought I would get a new scanner and pass my old one (Xerox Documate 250...a great machine!) to the staff. Well, the new scanner (Epson GT s-80) came with Paperport 11, so I thought I would be upgrading my software too. Well, surprise to me, this software is AWFUL! Sure, it has some new bells and whistles, like thumbnails when in a document, but the icons have been made smaller, resulting in slower cursor movement, and the software moves at the speed of a glacier! I was so frustrated on the first day of installation, that I finally benchtested it against my old software, as I run two computers side by side, and on the exact same document, it took 40 seconds to move through 25 pages on Paperport 11 versus just 5 seconds on Paperport 9. WARNING!!! If you want to slow down your productivity, go ahead and waste your time with Paperport 11. I'm uninstalling it as soon as I get off of here and re-installing my old Paperport 9.

Do You have a rating less than 1 ??? This program is an insult to a 1 star rating.

I have used Paperport for years - waited for Vista Version - bought it.

Fool me once - shame on you!
Fool me twice - shame on me!

Paperport 12 crashes - it worked initially - them crashes from startup no matter what I try - installed & re-installed.

Problem was I was ill and didn't reuse it during the short warranty period.
Support is non-existent. No on-line updates or worthwhile help at all - not even a forum site.

Criminal that they still pedal this garbage!!!

Do not waste your time on this program. What a shame - earlier versions worked so well.

Thank you for this. I have used Paperport since the year dot. I am still on version 7 with XP, and it is great. However, now I have upgraded to Windows 7 professional, it looks as if I am stuffed. All the reports are so bad, and no drivers exist for the old Stobe Pro for Windows 7.
I can still run the original software in an XP emulator thank goodness.
I just wish they had kept the old format which was so good and flexible.
I guess I will just have to get a new scanner that works on the Windows 7 platform and save as PDF's. It is so sad when acompany takes over another, and then trashes the software, which in my opinion was a class leader.

Nuance are totally disinterested in supporting Version 11 users for Windows 7. There is no upgrade path to Version 12, which is compatible with Windows 7, except to the professional version which costs more than a clean purchase of the standard product. When a company decides to treat it's customers in this way for me it is time to find an alternative. Utterly appalling customer service that in the long term will not serve them well

Does not support Windows 7 64. Terrible, terrible, terrible customer service. They do not care and will refuse to talk to you unless you give them a credit card. Absolutely terrible service. STAY AWAY!

written by TechieRobert on 21/10/2009

We tried to install Paperport on a Vista - 64 bit system, during the install, the setup crashed and we had to use up the free support call. Post install we find that documents load at a snail's pace. This is really disappointing considering the previous versions of the product. Would advice potential users to proceed with caution, you might want to weigh your options and look at alternatives such as Sohodox.

“I'd been using PaperPort since version 7. I've got...”

written by on 19/10/2009

I'd been using PaperPort since version 7. I've got document scans going back 15 years. With XP, I upgraded to v.9 and then v.10. V.10 doesn't work well with VISTA 64, although "it works" but causes registry problems (eventually). I upgraded to v.11 on a spare VISTA64 machine, and it seemed to be fine for several months, until I started using my registry cleanup tool. On the other machine, which according to my cleanup tool is in tip-top shape, v.12 wouldn't install. I was able to install it on the other machine after uninstalling v.11, but I've had problems with multi-document MAX to PDF format conversions -- "not responding" messages, etc.

My documents are important to me, and I'll be moving to another document management program. I don't like the "MAX" wrapper files in PaperPort. I DO like the "brightness/contrast" enhancement features, which more stable products like Presto! PageManager don't have. But at least, they're stable.

written by on 22/09/2009

I upgraded to Nuance Paperport 12 Professional from Paperport9 standard.
It crashed my system by corrupting video driver and a bunch of other things that I can't get sorted out. Now Paperport 11 doesn't run either. Avoid it if you don't want to ruin your day. I am going to find a way to scan and file documents without going near Nuance products again. The technical support call will be on your long distance call to Manila and the "uninstall" tool for both PP11 and PP12 have caused the damage
Be wise and find something else that will do the same job

written by on 19/09/2009

Like most reviewers, I too used Paperport for years, starting with an old Visioneer flatbed. It was really great, and consistently rated number one by magazines and reviewers. Yes, once Nuance got it, the first release, which was 11 and required by VISTA, was absolutely horrible. I spent days and tried to get assistance from Nuance. They only said I could get an upgrade. i spent I think 40-50 dollars to get it and go through their activation and could never get it to work. I purchased a new Canon scanner with CanoScan and arcsoft and it has worked very well after getting used to it. It functioned quite different than the old, Paperport, but like it very well. You have a lot of options and can select multiple pages (pdf) or scan to a defined program, ie Picasa, or word. Great

written by on 24/08/2009

I have used Nuance PaperPort 11 for about 10 years, back to the days ScanSoft was the company. Ever since Nuance bought the company the software has taken a dive. I keep getting "not responding" messages, have to reboot and may or may not be able to keep scanning. They do not release updates in a timely manner, and forget about customer service. The cost is also high for a very marginal product. I'm looking for a replacement, enough is enough. By the way Nuance, I work for a Fortune 500 company and you are trying to sell me other software, forget it. You just lost the sale.

written by technophile on 10/05/2009

1. Seamless conversion to PDF. 2. Reasonably good image editing and management. 3. Excellent auto-straighten feature. However, horrific and invasive activation scheme lets you activate the software three times before you have to call the publisher and pester them for an "additional" activation. This is truly nightmarish if you frequently re-install windows as I do. I have wasted days of my life on this nonsense. This is a show-stopper unless you use the same computer without any reloads for four years straight. Pathetic, scripted tech support that costs $9.95 per incident. Very unstable. Crashes constantly on any but the main folder. Nuance PaperPort 11 only worth purchasing if you never need to re-install it.

“Here are the reasons NOT to buy PaperPort:”

★☆☆☆☆

written by technophile on 30/04/2009

Here are the reasons NOT to buy PaperPort:

1. Nuance is a horrible company. It takes a lot for me to say this as I work for a technology company as well, but their activation policy (you get three activations and thereafter must convince them you are not violating the license you paid for) is insulting, frustrating, invasive and incredibly time consuming. If you install PaperPort more than three times (I've installed it probably 10 times because I rebuild/reload numerous times per year) you are automatically assigned criminal status and have to beg to get reactivation.

2. Poor backward compatibility. I have hundreds of files I created in version 7 that I had archived that I cannot access now. A real nightmare.

3. Very unstable. I currently am only able to access my master PaperPort folder from inside PaperPort, which renders it useless unless I move the document I want to view/manipulate into the main folder. This defeats the main purpose of the program - document management. I have been over this with Nuance tech support and reloaded (incurring the wrath of the activation god) to no avail.

4. Poor tech support. First you have to pay for every incident after your first, and second the advise you get comes from someone reading from a scripted manual, i.e."The first time the customer calls, tell them to re-install the software. This will cause them to use up another activation and have to purchase a new copy of PaperPort sooner." or some such nonsense. You get the idea.

5. PDF create will crash Word every time you open it. There is a workaround but it is a pain in the backside.

6. Just plain dumb. I had to again go before the emperor of activation and beg for another yesterday. I was "generously" given another activation. Sadly, the activation did not work because it was not for my serial number. So they gave me another activation on someone else's product key and even then, I could not activate.

Steer clear of Nuance until it is purchased by a company not run by lawyers. I have used PaperPort since version 7 and until version 10, I loved it. Now I am at version 11 and cursing the day I bought it. Feature-wise I like the program, but there are so many gotchas I would strongly advise someone looking for a document imaging solution to look elsewhere. Sohodocs and DocsVault are reasonable alternatives.

Had been using Paperport since early 90s. I was early on, pushing fellow lawyers on the paper free office concept and Paperport became a staple in my practice. With the switch to Vista I had to try Paperport 11. It is harder to navigate has only part of the functionality. Crashes with nearly every use. You have to activate it. You have to pay for support. You cannot download upgrades from the Nuance site without registering.

This is the sad end of an era. I am evaluating alternatives and will be converting many ".max" files in the near future...

“I run a small business and was looking out for...”

written by on 16/01/2009

I run a small business and was looking out for software to manage my documents. I zeroed down to two products; one was Paperport 11 and the other was Sohodox.

Paperport is an easy to use software, packed with some powerful features. However I did not buy for the following reasons...
1. Lots of bad reviews out here.
2. They charge for support.
3. Software activation required and there is a policy on the number of times you install the software.
4. Its buggy and crashes quiet often.
5. Runs slow in multi-user environment.
6. No proper Security.

I ended up buying Sohodox. This software has almost the same features as compared to Paperport plus the very interesting document type feature. They also provide free support for a year unlike Paperport.

Great way to manage and look at documents from diverse sources. Glitchy, Glitchy, Glitchy. I simply cannot get this product to scan and capture black and white images from a HP3390 all-in-one. Some parts of the program work great but this is the part that I need most. I would love for this product to work. Great concept; poor execution.

Seems to work once you figure it out. It can directly interface to the scanner. The PDF MCR mode seems to create much smaller PDFs than the HP supplied software. We're using an HP OfficeJet J6480. I believe that my Epson scanner and its software produced much smaller PDFs than the HP, which is why I tried this software.

I used PP 9 and was very happy. Bought vista computer and had to go to PP 11. I found it to very difficult compared to PP9.
My problem is adding an item to an existing file. I have not been able to get help from Nuance. Willing to pay $10. If necessary...

Also, icons appear on windows desk top. I will not be able to have that. Trying to figure out why. Paperport 9 was easy to use and filled my needs very well. PP 11 so far has only been a head ache for me personally.

Look for an alternative to paperport 11. Do not save your files to .max format, save as .pdf or .tif. When paperport dies how are you going to view your .max files?

written by Peter Coode on 28/01/2008

It is sickening that with operating system upgrades we are forced to change much of our software to new versions, particularly when the new versions offers no additionally functionality and in some cases actually perform less well. I can't do without PaperPort - I have therefore gone back to Windows XP and PaperPort ver 9. For that matter I don't like Vista much either.
