“Planet Fitness "Fits" Most People”

★★★★☆

Intro:

My wife and I are members of the Planet Fitness in Stratham, NH. We joined after having been memebers at a prior location several years prior. We toured the gym prior to joining to enjoy we liked the equipment, the layout and the gym overall. I hadn't worked out seriously for sometime, however, I used to be in very good shape. I started getting in shape again on a Bowflex, however, given the condition I used to be in I outgrew that very quickly, as did my wife. I used it as a psudo workout until I decided on which gym we where going to join.

Experience:

I see a lot of post regarding how Planet Fitness is always packed with people, and it is at times. Any gym worth going to will be packed at peak times, it's the way it is. If you find a gym that isn't packed at 5:00 - 6:00PM it is either a poor gym or extermely expensive, either of which makes sense.

I do not go to the gym to socialize, I go to workout and leave. It is very rare that I can not use a piece of equipment when I want to and if I have to wait it is a few minutes, which again is rare.

The staff ALWAYS says hello to my wife and I, and it isn't because I know them from outside the gym, they are friendly.

Granted, the dumbells at this location only go to 75 pounds, and that is a bit low in my opinion, but I knew that prior to joining and work around it by using the smith machine. There are no free standing barbells, only Smith Machines, and I do wish there was some, however, in my experience the vast majority of people do not know how to bench or squat correctly and this is to prevent injury, not a cost saving measure. Believe me, a solid Smith Machine cost a lot more then a good bench. There are plenty of ways to get a good chest workout without having to require a bench with a barbell, a Smith will do it. If you require more (without your ego talking) then join a Bodybuilding Gym, not a "Fitness" gym. We have people in our gym that bench (reps) with weight easily in the 300 plus range, and they don't complain.

Bottom Line:

For the cost you can not beat Planet Fitness. The equipment is excellent and you will never please all the people all the time, however, you can please the majority of them most of the time. By having good solid equipment, low prices and great hours (our gym is open 24hr 7 days a week) you will win out over the PowerHouse Gyms or elite gyms, that's just good business, and it works.

I highly recommend Planet Fitness but do suggest you take a tour and then ask to look around on your own. This way you can ask questions from some of the people there, to get a sense of things. Ask how long it takes to fix something when it breaks, what are the peak hours (our gym was VERY honest about peak hours and offers a print out). Judge for yourself.
