“Tanzania Medical Placement”

A group of us have just returned from an absolutely incredible month in Tanzania. All aspects for the trip were organised with great attention to detail and we really appreciated the help and support that was on hand throughout our trip, whether it was taking us to placement or organising parties at the hostel!
We spent 2 weeks at local hospitals. Placements were flexible and all doctors were very hospitable. They were more than willing to get us involved, where at all possible, and make the placement worthwhile. We even received a farewell lunch with drinks on our last day! The 2 weeks travelling on the end was just what was needed after a pretty full on 2 weeks and we spent a week on safari and a week in Zanzibar. It was great this was all organised for us which meant all we had to really do was enjoy ourselves!
Overall i thoroughly recommend this trip to all - i feel the fact that all the organisation, transport, accommodation and most food is included makes it worth the money spent. would have very easily stayed longer!

Hi there, I'm looking to do this trip, but I've seen a similar one with gapmedics and I'm wondering what made your trip better than with another company? Were there a lot of volunteers there at the same time and was it observational or hands on experience? Thanks!

Hi! For a start, I know some people who have done medical placements with gapmedics and also had a great time. I think they are all pretty similar. What I can say is despite us already going as a group, there would have been plenty opportunities to meet other volunteers had I gone alone, there were a couple of other medics, and 2 nurses there at the same time as us and I know some others came after. We had the choice of project when we arrived which I thought was really nice and all had been contacted and visited to see what was going on. There were 3 offered to us; 1 specifically related to AIDS, 1 more community based and 1 in a 'private' hospital. We spent time in the community project and private hospital where we were encouraged to get involved to the best of our abilities which was good. There was also lots of teaching by the Dr's there too which was interesting to hear. You really do get out what you put in. I had the chance to help deliver a baby and they really wanted me to get involved with this (even though I had little to no knowledge!) It was a great learning curve. Hope this helps! Let me know if you have anymore questions!
