“Poor quality software and Network card”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Krippers on 03/03/2014

I bought this as a replacement for sky and it's abysmal. I have worked in the set top box industry and I am currently a software quality engineer so I have a fair idea of poor quality work when I see it. The menu system is an abject failure and requires the box to be turned on and off to recover some of the functionality. Additionally the software managing any IP streams (BBC I-Player) is very badly written and it forces long delays and restarts to get to where you want. Given that there has been no software updates pushed to repair these issues or make the STB more efficient I can only surmise that the manufacturers have just enough interest in the colour of your money and nothing else. This is a brand that will never see another penny of my money. My recommendation to anyone reading this, don't bother.

“very limited in its features comapred with the competition”

written by cfc2000 on 28/11/2013

I bought this to use as a primary Freeview box for the TV and a PVR, as it had two tuners. Just not very good compared with the Echostar it was supposed to replace. No ability to zoom or change picture size from the default three settings. Poor reception which meant continual freezing. Terrible remote. Poor menu - software generally poor. In the end I've given in to my mother-in-law - that's how bad it is.

I've had this Goodmans GDB3 box for 2 years now and had no issues at all with it. I've also bought one for my parents and theirs is ok too.
In fact I've been looking for another one but they only appear to be available on eBay these days.

“I have had a Goodmans GDB3 for around two years now,...”

★★★★☆

written by on 01/08/2009

I have had a Goodmans GDB3 for around two years now, and the only thing that's happened to it is that the red button on the remote doesn't work. Not great for some text services, but I can still press the Text button to bring it up as on most channels Text and the red button do the same thing.

The firmware on this box is a generic one I've seen on numerous other boxes - nothing special there. The EPG is decent, albeit a tad unresponsive at times.

The box may, on occassion, switch itself off, but this isn't a regular occurrence - it hasn't happened to mine in months - and can be solved by waiting ten seconds and switching it on again.

Oh, and, it's probably not a box issue, but my remote seems to not accept new batteries any longer. It'll only function if I leave an old battery in it.

Other than that, it seems a good box for "just receiving Freeview". I wouldn't recommend buying it now, as it's rather out of date and there are better boxes out there, but it was good at the time.

I can still receive all the Freeview multiplexes in the area - 1, 2, A, B, C and D - but Mux D regularly disappears when I rescan. Due to the fact that I'm on a remote Scottish island where we've never received Five over analogue, I'll let that one slide, much as I love Film4. It usually reappears on the EPG if I rescan, and there are no problems with signal.

A great Freeview box, but not anymore.

I have several DTT boxes around the house from various manufacturers - one dating back to the inception of the service. All work fine.
I bought this Goodmans GDB3 for my son to take to uni and had the same problems as listed elsewhere here, switching off, freezing etc. As this device has been on sale for so long both Goodmans/Alba and the retailers must be well aware of the problems but continued to push them out.
Customer service appears to me to be non-existent and the comment elsewhere here about it being the BBC's fault shows how much they know if you do get a response - the BBC has not owned/operated its own transmitters or Muxs for some years now. Maybe they mean it is choosy about the type of programmes it will receive!
Will never buy Goodmans/Alba again - whatever the price.

Our Goodmans GDB3 box has worked fine for the first 4 months we have had it. However, for some reason, only two of the buttons on the remote now work, and several channels such as e4, itv and itv2 do not work at all. I have 2 other freeview box's which work perfectly well. It just appears that this is a very poor quality box.

After reading all the other comments I have saved myself money by not calling an engineer to look at aerial, I know where the problem is, its that little silver box with GOODMANS WRITTEN ON IT, so its off to the shops for a new one. Do not recommend Goodmans GDB3 freeview box.

It seems to be typical of modern Goodmans products - poorly designed and executed. It is a pity the name once renowned for quality products is, now, associated with virtual rubbish.

written by presdeed on 24/10/2006

Originally posted review on the 12th April 2005, as the Goodmans GDB3 box didn't work properly. Usual thing turns itself off, looses channels, etc. Since then, I have contacted Goodmans asking why they are still selling the units through Argos, etc., when they know they have an inherent problem with the software. Apparently it's not their fault, it's the BBC's - work that one out. Requested I send the unit back to them for a software upgrade, which I did at the end of April 2005, but unit still doesn't work properly and now requires the installation process every time I turn it on. I'm going to send it back again soon and I'm not really bothered whether I get it back or not, either that or I will take a hammer to it in the back garden for a bit of light stress relief. Ferguson unit still working perfectly and since, bought a Sagem unit with a hard drive, absolutely brilliant, can't fault it.
My advice stay away from Alba PLC products, every one I've had has been junk, from Breville kettles to Goodmans TV's. The TV sound has failed completely and it's less than 3 years old, total garbage.

The Goodmans GDB3 is cheap gear and the old saying you get what you pay for in this case is true. I have read various reviews and we all seem to have the same faults, Argos has replaced mine twice with no argument but it is still a pain. Im surprised Goodmans never recalled the model and sorted the problem.

★☆☆☆☆

written by Ricky1948 on 08/08/2006

Although the Goodmans GDB3 box provided a sharper picture than analogue, the picture appearance quality was poor. It lacked strength of colour and looked as if it needed contrast adjustment. However, this is not possible. However, I was fairly happy, and bought one for my mother in law. On setting it up, found that a number of channels would not display in widescreen format, some would switch constantly between widescreen and 4:3 and some stayed in widescreen all the time. Efforts to obtain any form of customer service to help with this problem, by phone or on the Web, proved totally unsuccessful, not even a reply to the questions. Goodmans/Alba customer service appears non-existent.

Recently remote has started to act up from time to time. Button 2, instead of bringing up BBC2, sometimes takes you into the TV Guide.

I think I am about to ditch it, and it will not be replaced with a Goodmans product.

★☆☆☆☆

written by martinsheppard43 on 22/06/2006

When I bought the Goodmans GDB3 freeview box it was already outdated. I was told that you could get it upgraded on the internet, and I searched for ages to find that the upgrade was from an independent source. Goodmans attitude was basically "well buy a GDB 4 and don't bother upgrading". So I persisted with the stupid thing constantly freezing and wiping out preset channels for a further 3 months.

I have never had so much trouble with electrical goods. Goodmans were totally uncommitted to being of any assistance, and eventually I went over to Sony, with whom I have had no problems. I recommend that anyone wanting to buy Goodmans products should take note that once you have made your purchase, then you are on your own.

★★★☆☆

written by carlos777uk on 29/05/2006

The Goodmans GDB3 freeview boxes cheap and basic, but it is missing vital 'favourites' feature of other boxes, which means long channel hopping to watch what you want!

I took this box back as it unfortunately developed a sound problem. I was gutted I'd not got a favourite channels store (and sort into order) feature. I couldn't believe it!

The picture would also lag more than my old Thomson, but then you get what you pay for.

As soon as I plugged the Goodmans GDB3 freeview box in, I realised I had made a big mistake! I channel surfed in vain. There was none of the channels that I actually wanted, except re-runs of countdown and the Sweeney! In summary, not recommended.
