“Unreliable, Unprofessional and rates Non-Competitive”

Having been a Caxton customer for a long time, I was very happy initially with the service. They had very competitive rates and everything was straight forward and not a single problem. Something changes in recent years and slowly problems have crept in and more often. The card has become too sensitive and blocks very easily. Its good they take security seriously but to the point you can't use it. When trying resolve issues, they are quite hard to get a hold of or at least hard to get a hold of the right people. If you are in a predicament, they won't call you back under any circumstances so if you are stuck, then you are screwed. In the end, its ended up losing me money. Furthermore, the customer service used to be great. I recently received one of the worst customer services experiences with the representative becoming aggressive, unsympathetic and accusatory. This was after my third problem with the card whilst on holiday, I was already frustrated, but that was the point I decided to leave this company and stay well away! Recently discovered that their rates are not as competitive as they used to be and there are much better cards on the market.

“No customer service”

Website not clear, the help line is only available between 8am and 7 pm, there is no help outside these hours. There is no customer service, and they are very robotic, just telling you they can't help outside these hours. Very poor considering the card is used many countries, with different time zones

“Confusing APP and Extortionate fees”

Loaded the card for the first time from the APP downloaded on my phone in GBP (well I thought it was) it automatically chooses AUD when you are loading it and you need to go in and change it to the currency but it is not clear on the APP and I uploaded it in AUD by mistake i changed it straight away but i was charged £39.00. I called the call centre to tell them of my mistake and they were not interested. It was clearly a mistake. And every time you go into load the card it always chooses AUD. I have used other currency cards on holiday and never had any problems or extortionate fees. Will not be using this card in future.

“Website difficult to use”

In the past I had been happy with Caxton, and worked well abroad as VISA. Mastercard not so good. i ordered a secondary card but when we thought we had activated it, it ended up creating a new account with anew card. Very difficult to manoeuvre website. We ended up with an new card and account we did not want, and then more confusion. I also randomly got sent an extra card with the wrong account. Poor customer service, poor interpersonal skills and complaints procedures.

I told them I go on holiday in two days and needed the card. was told this was not a problem. on the day of the holiday I phoned again, still the card had not been sent. asked for a refund, they said no one was there who could authorise a refund and to phone back later. phoned back later, was on hold for over an hour and then was told the person had gone home. so I had to go on holiday with no card and no money. finally got a refund, but they exchanged the money from euros to pounds so I ended up losing over £20. absolutely disgusting customer service!! unhelpful and rude.

“Brilliantly useful in Europe”

I used this card on an inter-railing trip around Europe, where I would predominantly be in Euro countries, except Hungary and the Czech Republic. I was nervous about relying on the card having read such negative reviews, but I can say that the card did not let me down once and I was thoroughly impressed. The Caxton FX app in particular was very helpful, showing all your transactions, exchange rates and allowing you to switch currencies. For example, it allowed me to transfer some euro into Hungarian Forint on my card, meaning the card was good value to use in Hungary as well - I was then able to transfer the remaining forint back into Euro, all using the app in seconds. For the Czech Republic, although it didn't provide crowns, I was still able to withdraw money from ATM's, as they just converted the euro in crowns on the card. Overall - I had no problems with this card and would thoroughly recommend it for those travelling in Europe.

“Never again”

Card loaded with sterling and Canadian Dollars.Keep in mind you should be able to have several currencies on this Master card . Used it once to with draw cash in Vancouver and low and behold the whole transaction is carried out in sterling...I can only presume the exchange rate fees being billed to me . Whilst I can understand mistakes do happen and I would have been able to accept that, if this had been dealt with swiftly, I am still waiting for a response to my email 8 days later.!!!!! Mind you the last time I needed some input from Caxton they took 9 days to reply. What a shame I was more than happy with the last card but after this experience I will not have the confidence to use it again.Neither will any member of my family ,who all have Caxton cards. Very unprofessional ,very poor customer service.So it will be a case for the ombudsman ,bit of bother but the last time I took a building society to task I was awarded compensation ,so well worth the effort. I am afraid swift ,helpful,customer service can either make or break a company ,Caxton do not appear to have grasped this .

“AVOID!”

AVOID! We applied on 24. June. They advertise 5 working days (Saturdays included). It is the 8. July now and we still don't have the card. Asked if they could send another card out by special delivery, they want to charge us £15 for their mistakes and lies. Really?!

The customer service is awful, I waited weeks for this card to be sent to be and it arrived after I had left to go on holiday. It is really hard to get a response to emails and phone calls. As well as this, once I had started using the card, I was unable to withdraw cash or use card machines, leaving me in a really difficult position. Very unimpressed!

“Incompetent Service and Hidden Rules”

I have had a Caxton visa card for a few years and always thought Customer Service a bit clunky. Out of the blue they sent a mastercard. I phoned to find out why...they are moving away from visa..no explanation..said balance xfer would take 48h..2 weeks later..nothing...cant get through on the phone...when you do, different stories..they say we will phone back but don't....utterly incompetent but they have got your money. will be closing my account, lost any trust I had in them... Slightly separately, they don't tell you that you can only use the card abroad maximum 4 times in as many days so if you need more money the card is invalidated. Avoid this company.

Hi, I had the same experience the week you posted this. Have you heard from them!? Its been two weeks since I asked them to transfer my money out of my accounts and I have heard nothing! They've removed my cards and not sent my money. They are not returning my calls. Let me know :)

“Expensive Junk”

It is not a fee free service despite their web site claims. Charges apply to initially load the card, and for withdrawals including when back in UK. Overseas withdrawals are disguised as a 'FX Markup'. I will never use it again, and would not recommend this card.

“Useful Holiday Tool”

I recommend this card..as long as you follow the cash withdrawal rules you should have no problems at cash machines..I have used the card in Spain and Ireland for purchases and all without hidden charges..topping up when the currencies rates are good is also a big Plus..useful saving tool for holidays and short breaks..avoid the risk of carrying cash and get this card..when I purchased this card the £10 was added to my Caxton account..not sure if still applies..

“A warning”

overall a Caxton card is excellent, but had one annoying experience, which could happen with any preloaded card. We were about to return the hire car at the end of a minibreak, and wanted to fill up with fuel before returning it. We didn't need much, and there was plenty remaining on the card to pay for the fuel we needed, but the fuel machine needed authority for 100swiss francs, which wasn't on the card, so refused. It was a card only, non attended fuel place, so had to use UK credit card, at a worse rate. As I say, just a warning that near the end of a holiday, having enough on your card for what you need to spend may not be enough!

“disappointed”

Just returned from holiday to Spain, Having used this card I would never recommend it to anyone again. I loaded the card without a problem, on the first day of my holiday I went to withdraw some money out of machine but there was technical issues with Caxton FX so was unable to withdraw any money, which was not a lot of good as I had put all my money on card. I phoned them up and was basically told I would have to wait till the system was back up and running again before I could get any money out - (this was 24hrs in the end). Next issue was on day 4 of holiday. I went to withdraw some money out and it wouldn't let me once again. I phoned them up again and was told I had used up my withdrawal limits - Which I now know is 4 withdrawals in 5 days.

“snags with caxton currency cards”

I've had mixed experience over a few years using Caxton Global and caxton euro. Secondary cards are available to over 13s so ideal for sending your offspring all over the world. So you don't want them left high and dry. When they do text you from some far flung place at 19.30 to say that their card won't work when it has been happily working for over three weeks it can cause you to panic. caxton are not available by phone at 19.00 which is a real pain if it's an emergency and you been left with no money despite there being money in the account. I think the problem may have arisen due to the number of times the card has been used in the last few days. I vaguely remember becoming aware of this last year when I had two of them in Peru. Since they can't spend what they don't have i don't see why they have to shut the service without warning to anyone. And now that I'm trawling the internet and their website I can find no help. have to wait till the morning to investigate further. Useless!!!!

“Good App before update”

The App worked fine until the update. Told to delete old App and re-install the new one. Now it wont work at all. Used the old App while touring on my Motorcycle in Germany. Shame that it doesn't work now. Will keep it on my iPhone and hope that the developers sort it out.

We use the Caxton Card in euros currency for our holiday in Portugal I order it online And we got it delivered in 3 working days.then you need to call them and get your pin.Customer service very helpful Very pleased with the service.You can use it everywhere where visa card is accepted as you use your debit or credit card. No fee charge on ATM or on other places. Until nowI don't have any bad points So overallI do recommend it and I give them 5 star

Why are Caxton charging my daughter £5 for a replacement card? She is a travel rep in Turkey and the card was eaten up by the bank hole in the wall. To top it all the card is coming home and I need to then send it out to her.

Probably because its part of there terms and conditions - try asking them directly. It sounds as if her argument is primarily with the Turkish ATM provider for 'eating' her card. I always carry two Caxton cards for each of my accounts as a precaution against such problems as I spend a lot of time away from my home address. Caxton recommended this in some of their online info when I first signed up. I paid for the second cards, if I remember correctly the last one was £20 so it looks as if they are only charging you for delivery. As to only delivering to a UK address - I have had this problem and it's presumably part of current UK bank security arangements. They can be a bit of a pain, but after the problems my wife had with her Canadian bank account, RBC, entirely due to inadequate security for their online accounts I no longer complain about British bank security.
