“Teething problems - does anyone else worry about...”

★★☆☆☆

written by karinah18 on 20/06/2011

I just bought my Megane 2 weeks ago second hand and have broken down twice already! The first time was due to it needing new coils. The second time was due to a fuse (something to do with the fuel I think). I have lost a lot of faith in it and don't actually feel all that safe driving it now as it skidded when I went round a corner recently (in dry weather) and driving it in the rain feels as though I'm rallying! I am a very confident driver but am actually starting to be quite scared when driving in wet conditions. It feels as though the wheels are moving slightly left to right constantly. I plan to get an RAC inspection ASAP and will be going back to the dealer with the results as it is still under waranty. I was a bit wary about buying it initially because I haven't heard amazing things about French cars but thought I'd give it a try-really wish I hadn't now! Always had Fords and they've never given me any problems! Onll good thing I will say about the Megane is that it is AMAZING on fuel! I travel at least 20 miles a day and 3/4 of a tank lasts around 2 weeks.

“Id just had a baby and needed something that felt safe...”

Id just had a baby and needed something that felt safe to take her out and about in. I love the inside and felt very safe but mechanically this car has been nothing but trouble to me since the start. It was only just over 2 and a half years old and I started to have trouble with the gearbox, took it to a renault dealer as it was still under warranty, they changed something and had it for a week (very inconvenient) and gave ma a £900 bill at the end when I went to get it!! Wasnt under warranty anymore apparently because it was 'euro' or something??? Anyway.... Passenger window stopped working, lights flickering inside, water dripping in to the car from the sunshade above driver seat. failed mot 2 weeks ago, VERY VERY expensive car parts and as I was driving from the garage my windscreen wipers decided to stop workin right in the middle of the windscreen!! now need new wiper motor etc and im at the end of my tether!! been looking at cheaper cars to run today because im getting rid. Bad mistake getting this car

I have one and I love it. Unfortunatly the previous owner replaced the catylitic coverter, with the wrong one, and I now need to pay for a new one, 800 pounds including labour. The really bad part is that I took it in to Renault 3 months ago and I still don't have it back, they just can't get the part!!! They are however paying for a hire car, wich helps I guess but this is not acceptable service!! Just don't know what to do...

“I cant fault the Renault Megane. Bought second hand so...”

★★★★★

written by on 01/06/2009

I cant fault the Renault Megane. Bought second hand so now just 3 years old.
Feels like a real grown up car. I have an Audi A4 2.0Tdi. To compare these to each other you may feel is unfair but i assure you it isnt.

The Megane feels just as sturdy. Feels as luxurious with soft feel buttons and short stubby control arms for light, indicators, etc. The only thing i miss is cruise control!!!!

The megane has all the trimmings, double sunroof, keyless entry/ignition, aircon, auto lights, auto winscreen wipers, ipod input (fitted myself 10pounds off internet, 90pound renault), 6 cd auto changer, esp, the list goes on...... after driving the megane the A4 feels dull. (if you forget the badge on the front)

The megane makes me feel happy, a very relaxing drive with all i could desire right at my finger tips.

This car just happily Cruises. The ride is beautiful. Pot holes are soaked up, speed humps dont rock the brain from your skull.

This car can easily compete with higher end cars. (also have two BMWs in family i have driven alot and this car isnt a come down)

If you read the net for reviews of a megane, bearing in mind most will be complaining as most arnt compelled to voice an opinion when its good, it would appear you may be taking a gamble. BUT when you win it really pays off.

“My 05 Megane 1.6 Dynamique is comfortable,economical...”

★★★☆☆

written by shirker on 28/01/2009

My 05 Megane 1.6 Dynamique is comfortable, economical and safe. I have always loved the styling. A basic interest in auto-electrics is a must when you own one of these cars. You never can tell when the next electrical fault will happen!.I have endured a broken window motor,a faulty camshaft sensor,a failed coil,a complete failiure of the air-con system,an airbag sensor constantly flickering,a front indicator that works when it feels like it and a few more that I have no-doubt forgotten about by now.Attempting to change a blown headlight bulb will have even N.A.S.A. bamboozled!,I nearly forgot to mention the front nearside door that water loves to leak through.
If Renault could produce one of these cars with a reliable electrical system, they would sell a great deal more of them.I have a number of friends and workmates who also own Meganes and they have all, more or less, endured the same troubles as me.

written by on 02/12/2008

Don't know how long ago your rear windscreen went but I worked at renault last year and there was a lot of problems with them. Renault eventually brought out a "technical note" and if your car fell between certain categories (can't remember what they were now) you got it replaced free of charge. Best bet is to speak to your local dealer. Hope you get some money back!

written by on 03/11/2008

I'm plagued by my Renaults, this 1.6 VVT was the first of the new 'booty' shape on a 02 plate, and my other Renault is a 04 Scenic 1.9DCI, this is even worse. The Scenic has had a new radiator, new windscreen, two new batteries, new card reader, new set of keys, new coolent vessel, computer reprogram, new engine mount. Outstanding problems that remain are dashboard turning off and on while driving.

“As most of you can probably tell I was not best...”

★★☆☆☆

written by IronMike on 13/03/2008

As most of you can probably tell I was not best pleased with the Megane, its a horrible medium sized family car that struggles with everything a family would need it to do and my family consists of my wife (5ft 4ins) my son who is 8yrs my daughter 2yrs and myself (5ft 10ins) and it always felt cramped. One good thing was the tyres, they were Michelin's but hey thats another company is'nt it. I paid just under £8000 for this car in May 2007 and upon research into trading it in was offered £5000 to £5200 for it in Feb of 2008, Huh a loss of nearly 3 grand, it had to go. I am now the proud owner of a 2003 Lexus IS 200 Sport Navigator and I would like to say, "What a Car" its superb I can't fault it, ok its no rocket ship but its no slouch either and the interior is excellent, no rattles or creaks, the engine (2.0litre straight 6, 24v vvti) purrs like a kitten and bursts into action when you want it, honestly it would beat the Megane in 3rd gear and then its still got another 3 gears to play with. I love this car, it looks pretty and aggressive at the same time but thats another review is'nt it.
Once again, sorry to all who own Meganes and to Renault also, you have my pity.

written by frankie on 23/12/2006

Tha attraction for me was the individual querky good looks of the design which have been improved with the 2006 facelift, Once I had driven it I wanted one. So far I have not been disappointed, it is a comfortable roomy car with all the bits & bobs you need. The electronic niggles found in older models seemed to have been ironed out & the 1.6 petrol engine is a treat to drive with plenty of power & flexibility at low speeds.
