Overrated Overpriced
worked for a prestige car specialist including bmw for 12 years. to sum it up BMW's are no better than say a ford and tend to be overpriced and overrated reliability is no better than any other car. still built on a production line the same as others my view you can buy a better car for less money. if buying lookout for electrical and sensor faults on older cars

Bmw Love It Or Hate It...
I have had BMW previously, the E36 shape. The E46 Coupe 318 is a different animal altogether. I felt a little regret at first as I had traded in my Mondeo TDCi and began to see my wallet get thinner as I visited the petrol station a lot more frequently...
The thing is theyre not about economy, theyre about driving. At first I was getting it up into 5th quicker than a London Cabby and wasn't appreciating the driving machine.
Once I had got over this I began to drive it as it should be driven, through the gears.
For a 1.9 it's not actually too bad, it's never going to return diesel economy and once I got over this I began to enjoy driving it more and more.
It looks fantastic, there's something about that BMW badge that sets it apart from "ordinary cars".
Downside, 2 doors can begin to hang and not close crisply. There's also the worry in the back of your mind of "what if it goes wrong..!!"
But all in all, a fantastic drive and a cut above normal cars.
Love it or hate it...
I love it.

All In All, Not A Bad Car, However I Won't Buy A B
All in all, not a bad car, however I won't buy a BMW again! We purchased this car mid 2006, ex lease car with 53K on the clock in 4 and a bit years we have only managed to wind the millage to 103K, All in all it's been OK, however the RAC have been called several times mainly for silly little things the first call out it just stopped on a motorway by the time the recovery team got to us it was working again, it was then sent to a BMW recommended garage for a diagnostic check, no faults were found. It went wrong 3 more time's, eventually on the final diagnostic the Cam shaft sensor was identified as being faulty, with this replaced no probs! Until it started losing coolant, we had realised it had a problem so, back to the recommended garage (I don't use main dealers) they changed a hose replaced the coolant, but again the light on the dashboard came on showing water level low, RAC was called again they topped up the coolant and off we went (at this point we were about 200mls from home) so, at the next service station I purchased a petrol can which I filled with water it was never needed, so back to the garage they said it had over heated and required a new head gasket, I said no it has never overheated (one thing you do when the low level coolant level light comes on) is keep your eye on the temperature gauge.
well actually the new cars dont really have a temperature gauge. The meter shows low-normal-overheating. If the engine was running say 95 deg. celsius - which is hotter than usual, but not overheating yet, then the needle would still be in the middle of the "gauge" saying NORMAL temp. But in reality the engine would be overheating slightly and the cooling system would have to work overtime to keep it below 100.

I Own A Bmw 318ci Auto Year 2000.it Looks Good But
I OWN A BMW 318CI AUTO YEAR 2000.IT LOOKS GOOD BUT IT LACKS IN POWER.THIS CAR WILL BE MORE IDEAL FOR BACK ROADS THAN THE MOTROWAY,AS THE 318CI IS A 4 CYLINDER 1895CC.I HAVE HAD PROBLEMS IDLE VALVE GOES UP WHILE ON GEAR P AND N,COOLANT LEVEL NEEDEDS TOPPING UP REGULAR AND THE ENGINE MANAGEMENT LIGHT COMES ON TO OFTEN.WILL RECOMMEND A 320CI OR 325CI AS I HAVE TESTED BOTH AND IS SMOOTH AND QUICK WITH 5 GEARS NOT 4 GEARS WHAT THE 318CI AUTO HAS.
PS CANT GO WRONG WITH BMW 850CI AUTO!
if you opt for a BMW 3 series with an automatic gearbox, you dont really know what bmws are for. Get a bigger engine. 1,9 is weak for an automatic gearbox and a 3 series chasis.

I Have Read Some Of The Other Comments Posted Here
I have read some of the other comments posted here and I agree that the car is good looking and is a good drive, but the car has not been all that reliable for the three years I have owned it. I have had trouble with a couple of sensors on the engine causing it to rev erratically and not to rev at times when the accelerator was pressed. The reverse sensors constantly go off when reversing even though there is nothing behind you. To top it all off, both front doors locking mechanisms have gone faulty within a couple of days of each other and have to resort to climbing in through the window. I am off to the garage to get them fixed right now!I will not be buying another BMW any time soon.
I found the 30th Oct 2008 review very helpful because I've been having similar problems with the crank shaft sensors. The problem started with the engine stalling in between shifting geers (mostly 1 to 2)after having the car fully serviced at a Nationwide garage in Reading (awful service!). they could not diagnose the problem and to my surprise, the BMW garage in Guilford told me that there was nothing wrong with the car!!! Eventually the problem with sensors was diagnosed by an AA mechanic at the roadside!
BMWs have a reputation for being reliable, but I'll be thinking twice before buying another one.

Bought My 2002 Bmw 318ci In Oct 07, Superb Car, Al
Bought my 2002 BMW 318ci in Oct 07, superb car, always wanted one, and was not disappointed. Mine is black with black polished 18 alloys, looks the business. I'm would recommend this model to anyone thinking of buying one, the engine sounds great and the overall ride and comfort is superb, mine has full hide leather interior which feels like an armchair when your driving. Looking at adding a twin cat back system to give a bit more power, but no need to go too mad, as it is powerful enough.
