Mine is a '93 1.4i club estate, i've had it nigh on four years now and to be honest, i can't fault it for the service it's given me. As a painter and decorator the car's been loaded up to the hilt with mine and my work mates painting gear and also all his woodworking stuff, and that ain't light, and the little car has never missed a beat. It's probabaly had three maybe four oil changes while with and i've never serviced it properly, just the occaisional set of plugs and air filter. Even when more robust cars were stuck in snow the astra got us home. In order to make a quick get away i once revved the engine out in second until the injectors were stuttering before going up into third and dreaded looking under the bonnet afterwards but all was okay.

Don't buy a Vauxhall. Even the new shape Astra Estates have that cheap nasty looking interiors. The interior is very plastic, colour scheme leaves alot to be desired. It is so slow, you can't depend on it to get you out of trouble( if you need to dodge someone pulling out on you) if you need to overtake someone on a motorway you need to give them a months warning! I dread to think how slow an emergency brake would be. Horrible..hate it.

My Vauxhall Astra 1.4 is nippy, easy to drive and cheap to run under the new tax regs.,
Cheap to service, typical reliable Vauxhall - my fifth and running exceptionally well despite its grand age of 9yrs+

Glad to hear that there are some other genuinely happy drivers of this particular car - it is a joy to own and drive!
Easy to maintain, less expensive to service and tax, pop it thru the car wash and it looks as new.
The usual 'hit' from Vauxhall!

I can agree that it is a joy to have one of these cars, but you can hardly describe it as nippy in any sense...

My Vauxhall Astra 1.4 is a brilliant car - mine is a 1993 'Club' Estate, with the 1.4 engine (there were two and mine is the 'perky' one - even the salesman talked me out of the 1.6, at 'new' purchase!)
Now over 83,000 miles, the only time it has let me down is the fan belt shredding!
It still looks and drives superbly!

It's full of extras, a good looking car and it feels very safe even at high speeds...it is asking to be pushed to its limits...BUT...a 1.4 it is 1.4 (oh yeah?) and its a pity if you'll buy it with this engine...90 dead horses....(like i did). I suggest that evrybody, even your grand mum , should have the 1.6 engine on it...DRIVE FAST... its against traffic jams.....(that was a joke ,ok?)..this car is at least for the 1.6 engine, dont forget that with all these extras it weights over 1.100 kilos.

I have never had any under-performance from any area of this particular Vauxhall - really reliable, trustworthy, inexpensive to run/service/tax - typically VAUXHALL - one of the few manufacturers to have decent service centers, too.
<br>12 out of 12 for the car, from the Scottish judge/jury and 'nil points' to this reviewer!

1.4, no poke?? don't agree, My 1.4 astra estate is fab, very FAST when needed, even when full to the brim (2 adults 3 kids plus dog)
Took it to france last year fully laden and pulling a 5ft trailer, also packed... the car was brilliant......

have had this car for approx 7mth's had a larger eng vauxhall cavalier before, the new shape astra is a great car to have if you are on a buget and have a family. smooth to drive great power stering very econmic to run. cheap to insure, the best thing is that it dose not feel like a 1.4 with the 16v eng very very nippy car.

I found this review very helpful because I've got one too and it's incredibly economical on a run. I've been getting 41plus mpg and for an L reg banger I find that incredible!
