Unless you are a professional photographer, then the Canon EOS 1D digital SLR camera might not be for you, as it comes with a price tag of roughly £5000 without pretty much anything.

To get a camera that you can take a picture with, you need a few extra things, and this takes you up to around the £5500 mark, which is hardly something for the occasional photographer/prosumer that would likely be better off with an EOS 350D, Nikon D200 or alike.

The Canon EOS 1D has a massive 16.7 mega-pixels, but a large pixel count is not everything, and this is not really why you buy this camera. The reason for buying this camera, is that it looks, feels, and behaves like a top of the range traditional 35mm wet film camera, but it is digital.

The EF mount brings a very broad range of lenses, and if you were to go for one of these, be assured that you are actually buying the Rolls Royce of digital cameras.

The picture quality is second to none, and can most likely only be beaten by a digital camera with yet another £10,000 on the price tag, taking you up to medium-format cameras with a digital back-end.

One thing though... You need lots of storage if you decide to go for this one, as each picture is about 5Mb - 10Mb each in .jpeg mode, and 10Mb - 15Mb on raw, meaning about 70 - 150 pictures per Gb of digital storage.

It's a true SLR, and as such, it is not really a "consumer" camera, but something that takes time to fully understand and get the most out of, but hey, when you do, there is no end to what it allows you to do.
