Don't Go There!!!

Awful place, awful people, many disappointed vacationers.

Don't be fooled by the poetic description of the surroundings: you will be living in a dirty, rundown, smelly place..

Damp, Rip Off, Health Hazard

My family and I spent a week here last summer and it was the most depressing and uncomfortable holiday I have experienced. By day two we were trying to find alternative accommodation - too scared to complain to the owners after the tales of intimidation we had heard. We snuck in and out like criminals. The place was dirty and damp and the furniture was of a poor standard. The cooking facilities were inadequate, there were broken shelves in the kitchen cupboards and dirty cups in the cupboard. The smell of damp, which was all pervasive, was the worst aspect of the property. We bought scented candles and air freshener to try to cover this but it didn't really work. Luckily my son and I who both suffer from asthma, managed to survive the week! The bathrooms were a disgrace.

The agent we booked through (Aspects holidays) informed us a couple of weeks before we left that they were no longer letting the property and offered us some unsuitable alternatives - which I wish we had taken up - but never warned us when we said that we would book direct ( it had looked so nice on Aspects website). We got in touch with them following the holiday, but they effectively washed their hands of the whole thing, and despite promises to contact us again we have heard nothing. After the holiday we tried various routes to complain and I had just about given up when I stumbled across this page. It is probably too late for me to try to get compensation and frankly I want nothing more to do with the place, but if my review can prevent others from booked this sh*tehole then at least I will have some satisfaction.

Hello! I am the new owner

PJLSmith

We had the misfortune of staying there in 2007. Dreadful place, dreadful owners. The place was dirty, damp and unsafe (loose wires, smoke alarms without batteries etc). We made the 'mistake' of complaining to the owner who ignored us and then, on our return home, issued with a small claims court summons, ludicrously suggesting that we had broken the washing machine and left the place in an untidy state! Unbelievable! Luckily I had had the foresight to use my video camera to capture the state the place was in when we arrived and how it looked when we left. When faced with that evidence the 'court threat' was withdrawn. I really should have pursued him further and sought damages against him but wanted nothing more to do with place. Absolute charlatan....with numerous complaints against the place.

ACTINGROSE

The good news is that these disgusting people have now sold the property and hopefully the new owners will try to put the house in order whether it's for holiday lets or private use. We visited said palace in 2007 and had a torrid time and in actual fact refused to stay there at all. Needless to say, we lost our claim for a refund. The biggest lesson I learned is that as a consumer, we have no rights against such places. The judge said we should expect damp in a historic building such as this. The agents had had a raft of complaints prior to us booking which I challenged but they are apparently "not accountable". Call me a cynic but I don't trust any thing or any one when it comes to business. Visit Britain is a joke and are only interested if the business concerned has paid them a fee to be a member. I will NEVER use letting agents again!!!

Complete Pain, Police Called, Dangerous

I would like to add our recent experience of spending less than eighteen hours at one of the dangerous buildings at "Curry Hall/Treetops Estate/Bochym Manor", said property at time of booking being "D'Artagnan" but being changed to "Murcutio" when we arrived.

It was so shocking we had to call the Helston police to help escort us, protect our children and guests off the estate. This all took place this past August, 2012.

We booked it through Cornish Traditional Cottages, (CTC), and despite the shocking experience that we encountered with both of the Paynes they, "CTC", continue to market the estate. We went legal against CTC who have, at our legal expense, reimbursed us in full, but only because we employed a lawyer to pursue the case.

Is there one person who is leading this that I can contact in private in order to add our experiences to the growing volume of awful holidays others have had?

My family and I had a terrible week at this place last August. We were too scared to complain and stuck it out for the week (one of the party left early as the rooms were so damp). We spent most of the week trying to find alternative accommodation and heard some terrible tales about guest intimidation. Luckily the children were oblivious and managed to enjoy the holiday. It was the worst I have ever had. How can we get these people stopped from renting out their substandard accommodation?

DangerousPains

We are the family that called the Police earlier this yearand went after Cornish Traditional Cottages to get out money back - which after the services of a lawyer we did.

Feel free to contact me at the following email address if you would like to talk on the phone about The Paye's and what can be done to stop them doing more damage to Cornish tourism and more importantly innocent families & holiday makers.

Poldhu Hall Aka Bochym Manor Aka Beachamp Hall Aka Cury Hall

14-21 July

Beware: There have been multiple changes of name for the main hall, and changes of agency to lose bad reviews. (Search Bochym Manor and Cury Hall for example.) The 'cottages' don't have name plates, perphaps because of this name changing strategy.

A pity, given the sight and location a lot of investment and a bit of customer care the property could provide a 5 star holday experience. It is, or was, a magnificent country estate, but has been neglected and is in genteel decline. For the botanists: Japanese Knotweed is out of control!

Musty smelling cottage, with bed actually damp, it seems the place wasn't heated / aired when unnoccupied. Bizarre arrangements for reporting problems (outside post box only read on weekdays - no contact for anything more immediate). No towels provided, only teatowels in kitchenette. Supplementary charge for electrity not on letting agency web site. (Later update to web site mentions - now demanding advance deposit for this - but no detail of precise charges). TV not working, only changed on Monday due to aforementioned reporting arrangements. Cooker oven tripped circuit breaker, also reported by note. (We had to improvise cooking food already bought.) This was not fixed during our visit. Amazingly the laundry facilities (2 out of 4 machines labelled faulty, £5 a wash) are locked at 5pm each evening.

I had intended to pay the electricity charge as a matter of goodwill, depite this not being part of the contract. But in view of all of the above decided no to. I left a note explaining. Unfortunately I also left a coat hanging on the back of the door.

The owners responded with an abusive hand written letter to our home address. This contained completely ficticous claims for damages. (e.g. suggesting that we had de-programmed the dead TV, that we had incurred unnecesssary costs in wrongly reporting the cooker faulty - actually it tripped the circuit breaker only after a time when the thermostat operated). They even confessed to disposing of my coat, claiming it was not even fit to send to a charity shop. It was actually clean.

I see from at least one other past review that the owners have behaved in the same way before in responding to complaint with an abusive counter claim.

I am going through terrible experience with Dr Payne and would appreciate support.

piscie

@Janridley: I must get in touch with you too. It seems there is a growing band of us out to make sure that Paynes get stopped once and for all. I'll ask the webmaster to forward my email address on to you to give you that option.

BTW the blogger has now posted the latest review. Someone has stayed at the latest incarnation 'Treetops Estate', and it didn't tka long to attract a bad review. I suppose they'll have to change the name again.

janridley

We stayed at Beauchamp Hall estate in 2009 and it was, in my opinion, awful. We booked through English Country Cottages and complained at length when we returned home. He asked us for money to pay for all the stuff we had complained about, we refused so he took us to small claims. 18 months on we had to travel to Taunton as Mrs P was unable to be 'jiggled' in a car or train. WE WON - and we got full costs. The judge was very surprised that Dr P had expected us to clean all the windows and wash, dry and change the bedding before we left ....even though the laundrette was closed on Saturday. We now know that it is likely we were that sleeping in dirty sheets.Happy to support anyone who is going through this - I did at least learn an awful lot!! In my opinion what is going on here is quite simply fraud.

Well done to woever it is who has set up a blog.

piscie

@Jafflong: We must get directly in touch. I'll ask the webmaster t forward my email address to you.

I have more news - the owners have actually followed up their abusive letter filing a small claims court claim against me - which I will defend.

An I've learned of yet another new name! on corncott they are now called the Treetops Estate, and the 'cottages' have now been given greek sounding names.

JAflong

I too had a really bad holiday last year at this place and had a similar experience, right down to the hand-written abusive letter! I still feel so riled up about it that I've started a blog about this place and its vile owners. Why can't they spend some of the energy they put into making up new names and flowery descriptions for this mouldering estate on fixing it up and turning it into a decent holiday venue instead?
