“Ford cars for my big family”

★★★★★

written by godknowshow on 04/11/2013

My grandparents, my parents and I use Ford cars. My grandparents said they had bought a Ford for its affordability. My parents use a Ford for its convenience. Then, I bought Ford Escort Mk2 RS2000 when I started to work, mainly for its controllability.

An iconic car without a doubt. Bought Custom model in June 1980. Was finished in Signal Red 80 - which was almost a Salmon Pink!! Fabulous Recaro front seats and full door trim in Chocolate colour. Great drive but only 4-speed box and drum rear brakes which coped quite well with the available performance. Windscreen leaked though - rubber was sam as fitted to Escort Popular model. Changed screen rubber to that with plastic/chrome insert and painted it Black - dry feet again! Looked great with 4 Cibies on front too. Super Oscar Drives on top and Oscar fogs below bumper. Exhaust didn't last long - back box fell off one night! Sold 1985 and much missed.

Absolutely amazing car, controllable, enjoyable easy to maintain and relatively easy to source parts for, handles like no other car on the road today.
Iconic looks and a car that everybody knows, great sporting heritage known world wide, makes you really feel like your driving the car not just sitting on an arm chair,i would have liked to have known how there value was going to go up and the interest that people show for them because i would have bought a yard full of them!
Just to recap, its the car that started it all with its rally pedigree and basic construction it just worked on so many levels.
Excellent!

written by cleekerdelux on 06/09/2009

I bought this 1980 Ford Escort Mk2 rs2000 custom in 1982 with c.22,000 miles. It was/is used infrequently during the summer months, and has never been used in the other 9 months during my ownership. In 1985, I modified it in order to keep performance on a par with mk3 rs turbos; fitting genuine 'X' pack accessories; ie german 'big valve' head, 44 idf downdraughts, steel crank, balanced & lightened rods, quick rack, single piece prop shaft, bilsteins, stiffer springs etc. It now has covered some 34k (genuine) miles, and has covered around 1,000 miles in 10 years. It is a 'practical classic', reliable, fun and highly recommended to novice and older! enthusiest alike, and easy to maintain. ***** star. Offers...? NO WAY !!

these fords were without a doubt the best car fords ever built ,i prefered the 1600 but thats a personal view ,this car was made to be worked on and made to modified it was raced and raaied all over the world ,i saw one at Santa Pod it consistantly beat v8s all day ,alas they are to pricy to buy today and the panels have gone through the roof along with prices for the axles / mexico cross members and those webber carbs /burton heads the car is and was victim of it own sucess .

I bought my car back in 1999 over 2000/2001 totally rebuilt it to a standard factory condition.I only drive it in the summer as its always raining in the UK but its worth the wait. Great handling car, great to drive(no computers or crap like that to get in the way). If you are thinking of getting one my advice- GET IT.

My first car and favourite. They are increasing greatly in price due to the classic factor. Raced at Bathurst and have won a heap of rallies. SOHC 2.0 Litre Pinto packs a punch.

“I owned mine for 12 years, and I bought what I thought...”

written by sonikk4 on 21/09/2006

I owned mine for 12 years, and I bought what I thought was a good car, but it turned into a monster, so I spent the next 4 years rebuilding and modifying it up to a much better condition. With the modified engine I spent many happy hours blasting up and down the autobahn's scaring much more powerful cars, or so they thought, and generally wearing a big grin.

It was a reliable motor driving back to Scotland from Germany on numerous occasions, without a hiccup. The only real problem being the loud exhaust, but it did sound really good coupled with the gargle of the twin 45's.

I would love to have another one (the previous one had to go when I bought my new house). I just need to convince the wife.

The Ford mk2 Escort RS2000 is great! We used our RS2000 to remove a stump within our yard. The car did not really like this mainly due to the fact that we happened to drive the radiator through the fan. Ihe one good thing which I must commend Ford on is the easy straightening of their front ends. Also I must commend ford on their interchangeable radiators eg. ford laser, Holden RED radiators.

★★★★★

written by durston201 on 04/09/2003

I owned a Ford mk2 escort RS2000 a few years ago and i must say it was the best car i have owned or driven.
exetremely good on performance considering the age of these cars is up to 27 years old now.
110 mph top speed and a 0-60 8.5 secs in standard spec( 2.0 OHC pinto 110 bhp)is pretty respectable even by todays standards.
the parts availability is very good because these old beasts are still being used in rallying and i did hear of a vauxhall XE powered group 4 spec mk2 escort beating a wrc spec focus in a rally so they cant be that bad eh! everything can be uprated on these cars depending on the size of your wallet and believe me the money is well spent as these cars are an absolute head turner when you go haring up the lanes with the exaust at full chat and twin webers emitting that dinstinctive induction roar!(owners of this fantastic will know what i mean)
the only downside to this motor is the short lifespan of the seat trim of those famous fishnets or rare rolltop recaros, a fellow called roy nunn can supply the betacloth trim for no less than £100 a metre it is that rare!
obviously the other downside is rust which affects all cars and cannot be avoided but dont let this discourage you because an enthusiast owner will have waxoyled the whole car and garaged it so they are out there in pristine condition you just got to look.
prices of concourse examples can go up to 5000+ but a really clean good car will probably set you back around the 3000 mark, a grand less and your looking at a car that may need some work on the body and running gear which can be costly.
oh and as a final note when i sold mine the bloke who brought it had seen ten other cars which were fakes, basically a normal escort bodyshell with all the bits fitted to make it look like the real thing. all rs cars were made from strengthened bodyshells the easiest way to tell a real one from a fake is the strut tops in the engine bay an rs will have a square strengthening plate on the inner wings whereas a normal mk2 escort wont.

Yes but you can put RS 2000 strut plates on a standard MK2 Escort.
