“Extremely Biased (or sponsored)”

They have that "tendency" to destroy every other car if it's not Vag or Ford. They are dinosaurs of motor journalism. I'd take it "okay" if they've rated a car 3 stars while others rated it 4. Just check French manufacturers, Fiat for my point. Autoexpress rated new Captur 4.5/5 Whatcar rated it 3/5. Megane is 4/5 in AE, 2/5 in WC. Let's see a direct comparison; they rated interior quality of VW T-Cross which is full of hard plastics 4/5, and 3/5 for Renault Captur which is mostly pronounced as "best interior in the class, even better than some cars class above" by other magazines. If i could rated WC 0 stars out of 5, i'd easily do that. Moral point of that bias from an engineer standpoint; they are being disrespectful and injustice to every employee worked for that "destroyed" car. Such a shame. I wouldn't use WC even as a doormat.

“Should be re-named 'What German Car'”

★☆☆☆☆

written by 485Wilson on 26/12/2015

What a waste of space, unless you are one of the growing number of German car worshiping sheep that this country is plagued with, you are wasting your time and money. From an industry insiders point of view I can assure you that German cars are overhyped, overpriced and incredibly unreliable but strangely this magazine worships everything they produce. I think if Audi/VW/Mercedes etc put a badge on a dog dropping What Car magazine would give it 5 stars. Don't fall for the hype and save yourself time and money by avoiding the biased rubbish written in this magazine and website.

Totally agree JD Power survey bares this out. you cant expect a magazine that advertises German cars to say anything against something that is better . I can tell you that I believe the polo Blue Motion fitted with a central arm rest is a dangerous car ,If you have driven one you will know what I mean.

“Biased”

★★☆☆☆

written by on 06/11/2013

I've found whatcar to be incredibly biased. In terms of hatchbacks they compare budget cars to premium cars which is just ridiculous. For example slamming a Kia down because it doesn't have the quality of a Volkswagen is just sheer lunacy. There's a reason Vw's cost more btw. As well as that, they always focus too much on the 'fun' factor. Everybody knows the ultimate fun car is a rear wheel drive car, not a front wheel drive hatchback. In comparison top gear or carbuyer are so much better. They talk about the true qualities of a car and especially carbuyer try to give a sense of reality of the car being tested.

“Incredibly Biased”

★★☆☆☆

written by Donna325 on 06/06/2012

I really do wonder how this magazine arrives at it's scoring for cars. It's basis for quality seems to be proportional to the amount of soft touch plastics are on the dashboard and nothing else. Cars that come top of independent reliability tests are down marked compared to ones that don't do so well, because of perceived quality of soft plastic rather than actual quality/reliability. I used to take notice of this publication at one time, until I found vehicles they rated highly where ones I found unreliable and frustrating to own(Volkswagen) with very poor dealers and after sales. I can only think this is caused by not actually paying to run a car, so that the experience of car ownership is something that is beyond the understanding of the WhatCar journalists. My advice would be not to take too much notice of this publication when deciding your next car.

Used this site a lot when I was looking for a car. In fact I found my excellent Ford Fiesta 1.6 through their used car section. The prices on the dealers on their site seemed to be much better than my local ones who were very expensive.
Good valuations which I used on many occasions.
I also have the magazine on each month and find it great for keeping up to date with new cars.
The deals section is really useful and an area you should keep an eye on if you are in the market for a bargain.

“WhatCar? is a good magazine for the average Car user....”

★★★★☆

written by saltrampen2 on 09/02/2006

WhatCar? is a good magazine for the average Car user. They review all types of car, not just the sporty ones. Their reviews give good accounts of each tested vehicle's size / performance / refinement and handling. However they do not say much about each model's reliability in the initial reviews. My overall impression is that they are slightly biased towards the car industry rather than the driver - they often run features (next to adverts for loans) praising th e virtues of older models which in previous reviews their reliability / satisfaction surveys had given very low scores to.
One of the best features of this magazine are the comments made on "lifer" cars - cars ran by the reviewers for 6 months or so with monthly updates. I think these ultinmately tell you more than the initial model review .

WhatCar? is an excellent magazine for detailing all that is new, old, good and bad in the world of the automobile. I've been reading WhatCar since I was a lad and have never missed an issue. If you like cars then you need WhatCar in your life. It's also handy if you are thinking of buying or selling a new car.
