Once I collected the car — an older Japanese model — everything was fine. The a/c vents seemed to be stuck on "defog", but apart from that, the car was perfectly serviceable.
The disaster was collecting the car. I had made a booking through an agency, airportrentalcars.com. They had told me that I was to pick up a car from "Econony Rent-a-car" at Wellington Airport. There is no such company at the airport, no driver was waiting for me, and the provided telephone number was not answered. I spent more than 30 minutes on the phone with airportrentalcars "customer service" — which turns out to be Priceline in the USA — and got nowhere. Eventually, an hour later, someone called me and gave me the phone number for Scotties.
Apparently, Scotties had a booking in my name, but did not have my contact information. I didn't have theirs. How airposrtrentalcars thinks we were going to get together, I have no idea. After contacting them, I had to wait another 35 minutes before they picked me up.
