WARNING! Visa debit card trap in Spain

Unless you have a credit card, you will be penalised for using a visa debit card. Not enough warning of consequences on the brokers' site although the price was good considering the last minute nature of our booking (no thanks to Holiday Autos but that's another story).They can't preauth or 'bolck' debit cards in Spain like in the UK. Apparently they also cant charge the full excess up front and refund it if I return it safe (what's stopping them??) So on a 57Euro booking quote you will also be asked to pay 40+Euro "admin fee", 70+Euro insurance to "secure the excess", full tank of fuel at their rate (refunded any unused fuel but at what rate?) Then to top it off 21% tax on those 3 things, so a 57Euro quote went up to 220+Euro's. At 9pm at night in an unfamiliar airport with 3 kids under 7 we had a tough choice. Spend their holiday funds on a car or go by public transport. We opted for trains and glad we did even with 3 child's car seats in tow. We spent 100Euro's getting to and from Villa Nova twice and travel around Barcelona. Beautiful coastline train ride. Heartless, robotic staff at Firefly desk, robbing vulnerable families at the start of their holiday. Very very disappointed with my first booking with economycarrental but they had good prices and although they aren't responsible for Firefly or Spanish trade laws a word of warning would have been good considering all the pop-ups about how other car rental companies hide fees.
