“Disgusting firm”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Hayley31 on 23/04/2020

Do not use this firm. They charge you for insurance that you haven't agreed to and then refuse to refund it. I hired a care with them having already bought the excess insurance, unbeknown to me they still added it to the agreement, I don't know how as it isn't clearly stated and I would have told them to remove it had I seen it on there or even had it mentioned. In the current financial climate I sincerely hope this firm goes under.

“Poor car damaged took photos they would not honour”

★☆☆☆☆

written by agnessteer on 02/01/2019

We hired a car from MAlaga airport. A car that had alot of damage. We were told to take photographs of the damage and email in which we did as its very hard to get back to the desk. They kept our original documentation also and will not send back to us. They were not very nice to deal with and despite showing them pictures of the damage they would not back down.

“disgusting service”

★☆☆☆☆

written by tiPeterson256 on 11/09/2018

the car we rent with firefly had already 14 reported scratches all over the car when we took it from the airport.when we handed back 1 month later the pretended that we made another one . when we checked the control paper, we found out that they put "crosses" ( for the reported damages) where there was no damage and then they pretend that you made new damages just next to that "cross" . The staff there in Malaga airport is just so arrogant and impolite they told me that their life was so much more important than having a discussion with me )when I refused to sign to return paper with the supposedly new scratch ....NEVER AGAIN

“AVOID.”

★☆☆☆☆

written by BRIC on 23/09/2017

I would not recommend this company to my worst enemy..... My experience was strikingly similar to many reviews in this forum, so similar that I have formed the opinion that their business model is to try to sell expensive insurance to customers who already have it, and when this fails, fabricate evidence of minor damage to the returned vehicle. They then super-inflate the repair costs and expect the customer's insurance to cough up. Firefly/Hertz should be prosecuted as their behaviour, in my view, goes far beyond mere sharp business practice. We rented a Fiesta from the Malaga branch. When we declined their insurance after the expected hard sell the rep's attitude changed. She rubbished the insurance we had bought through Holiday Autos and became very cold and abrupt, as though I'd just insulted her mother. 'Where is the car parked please?' I asked. 'Somewhere out there' she replied, waving towards the carpark and avoiding eye contact. Great customer service. The car was a bit long in the tooth with 50 odd k on the clock. There was no aerial and we counted 15 areas of damage not all of which were recorded on the hire documents. I returned to see the employee of the month who seemed rather annoyed at me for some reason. I eventually got a member of staff to update the damage on the documentation and off we went. We didn't use the car much, not even using a full tank of fuel. It was carefully parked at all times and we returned it, out of hours, noting that there was no additional damage. You know what happened next, don't you? You are right, we received correspondence containing 'evidence' that we had caused the sixteenth piece of damage to this vehicle. How on earth did I manage to find somewhere to damage that was not already damaged? All the popular sites were already taken! The photos were indistinct and could have been from any place on any car. The 'scratch' looked more like a scuff which you could rub off with your finger but their expert assessor put the damage at nearly 200 euros.........WHAT!!!! I have told them via their website not to take this money from my card as I require better 'evidence' than that provided......I await their reply but, given their reputation, I expect them to take the money and ignore me. I feel helpless, a victim of crime, and I am seething at this company. I hire cars 2 or 3 times each year and I have never been treated so badly before. This was my first and last experience with Firefly but I am a Gold Card member with Hertz.....They have just lost me as a customer too. I don't suppose they care.

“firefly malaga car rental”

★★★★☆

written by 292Douglas on 18/07/2017

After last years fiasco with centauro I was not relishing hiring a car this year. I once again pre-purchased my excess ins in uk and booked my car through auto Europe(no probs) the rental group was firefly, who I hadn't used before and the car for three weeks was under £15! I expected a rough ride when they tried and failed to get me to buy their excess waiver ins. I gave the car a good look over and took it away . I have a car in spain so this was a cheap way to get to and from the airport and it was parked up the whole of the holiday. On returning the vehicle I noticed the mileage on the agreement didn't match the the actual car mileage and was short by 1800kms. The car had a limit of 60km a day I pointed this out to them and thought that was that. A few days after returning home I was charged £247 for extra miles. I contacted them and they apologised for the error and have promised to repay the money to me. So I am a very happy bunny and will be using them again.

“Another ripped of customer.”

★☆☆☆☆

written by SeanM40 on 03/06/2017

Dropped off our car a short while ago. The pick up was a nightmare a week ago with long queues so we left plenty of time for the return. Could not get parked close to the drop off so parked where we could. We did not take their insurance but bought ours beforehand. I was very concerned on our return, we checked the car for dents and scratches but found nothing greater than the 10mm they advised of. Like another family dropping off we doth had the same experience. We barely used the car and the lady went straight to the car and pointed out damage to the bonnet! We were looking for dents and the like but not this and cannot believe it. The staff really could not care though I did ask for the complaints book and will formally follow this up. They seem to pray on those hiring and not taking out their full insurance so please be warned as we will never use them again and I suggest no one else does. Hertz the parent company should be ashamed and embarrassed of the company.

“Car hire insurance ”

★☆☆☆☆

written by rayj973 on 28/05/2017

Do not rent a car from this company, ever! We arrived at the Firefly office at Malaga airport at 22.00hrs, the stated pick up time, tired after travelling and ready to complete the final stage of our journey. After waiting 2hr 20m I then had to deal with a confusing conversation with the Firefly rep who was trying to sell us additional insurance we did not need using broken English , I clearly said no repeatedly- only to discover £133 had been charged to my credit card the day after I returned home. The first car we were given had dents and scratches all over (not recorded on the condition report), there was also a sizeable chunk of the rear tyre missing- this could have been extremely dangerous. We returned to the desk and were given another car- this was better but again had scratches and dents not recorded on the condition report. I thought I had hired using a reputable company 'Holiday Autos' and naively thought they would have vetted the suppliers they used, obviously not looking at the ratings and complaints I've seen online since. I completed the Holiday Autos feedback form when I returned, but no one has contacted me for further information- I won't be using either company again in the future and will advise anyone else I speak to the same, extremely disappointed!

“Rip-off insurance”

★☆☆☆☆

written by HarrisBilie on 06/05/2017

I booked a car for 29 days using rentalcars.com. It was for a Renault Megane or similar from 28th March until 26th April to be collected and returned at Malaga airport. The quoted rate included normal insurance with CDW and we had taken out extra insurance to cover the potential 1000 Euro excess. When I came to collect the car the lady at the desk wanted a credit card. I told her that I had paid to Rentalcars.com all insurance plus extra cover for the excess. She insisted on a card and then asked me to sign a form. I had no choice as she would not have let me have the car. I thought it was just to put a block on the card to cover any claim. I did not expect any charge to be made unless there was an accident or other reason. On our return to UK we found the charge which had converted to £188.81. We contacted Rentalcars who say they are unable to help as I had signed the form at the desk in Malaga. Having taken out the insurance with Rentalcars Firefly had no reason to charge again and the way it was done was underhand and unclear. We tried to get a refund but no reponse to email and the phone is never answered.

“Slow service, hidden costs”

★☆☆☆☆

written by JennnieG on 18/04/2017

We booked car hire picking up at Porto Airport in Portugal under the impression that this would cost us around 50.00 pounds. We're not stupid and realised that there would probably be some additional costs but had not expected the grand total for 4 days car hire to be over 300.00 pounds for a small car. It took us an hour to get our car, which isn't good when you have an over tired toddler to deal with, and when we did get the car we had problems with the old and stained child seat (which cost us 8 euros a day!) We got stung on everything going, from being charged the absolute maximum for tolls (we had no choice but to pay via the car hire) to the excess mileage. In hindsight we probably would have been better off going with one of the companies who seemed initially more expensive but would have worked out cheaper.

“Beware of the mileage excess rip off”

★☆☆☆☆

written by RentElsewhere on 07/04/2017

If you make the mistake of renting from these people check your contract VERY carefully, before you take the car, to see if you have limited mileage rental or not. Yes it is written there if you look hard enough, but if they spent more time pointing out what it is you are getting in your rental rather than trying to upsell you their untold extras it would be a far more honest way of doing business. The first you will hear of it is when they charge your card their mileage excess on your return in your absence! When pointed out to their customer care team they made no effort to help out in any way, I for one will never rent from them again and would advise anyone looking to rent from Malaga to do the same.

“as i was stood waiting to pick up my keys i heard...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by 128Stack on 01/04/2017

as i was stood waiting to pick up my keys i heard every other customer being told that their credit card is not working and if they only have a debit card they will have to purchase their insurance cover if not they will rip up their agreement and they can go somewhere else. mmmmm. i had pre booked mine vis do you Spain.com stating i did not require their insurance. at the desk in Malaga airport they just advised me to check the car over before leaving and anything less than n 5 cm would be ok? surprise surprise, on my return they show me two small scratches on the front bumper each about an inch long. i said that i was told at the desk that up to 5 cm was OK? the Firefly employee showed me the paper work that i signed which showed at the bottom of the very last page a printed ruler showing increments of one centimeters and in very small print stating that any mark of one cm or more will be classed as damaged. anyway they had already taken 1000 euros deposit from my credit card, you know the ones that never worked for anyone else? and said they will deduct £310. i firmly believe that they will not repair these scratches and catch someone else. make sure it is not you. Avoid Firefly

“AVOID - DO NOT USE”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Chubbster1971 on 15/03/2017

We had to wait nearly 90 minutes at the airport to collect the car an this was in March so god knows what its like in mid season. They added a credit card charge with no mention when i was paying. There were no firefly staff on the carpark to run through the damage on the car. Unfortunately i had a puncture and so i had to change the wheel. I attempted to ring the emergency assistance number given to me to get some advice on what the do as the the spare tyre was only a temporary one. The number was unobtainable??? I then attempted to ring the Malaga office for advice. I tried every 5 mins for over two hours and nobody answered the phone and occasionally it was engaged showing somebody was there. I then emailed them with an urgent in the subject header. Several hours later still not able to speak to anyone i received a reply. By this time it was late afternoon an my planned trip for the day was ruined. They said the emergency number which began with 902 was not always available from none spanish phones??? Unbelievable for an international car hire company on the costa del sol!!. They advised to take the car to the drop off which was the next day. At the airport i was charged 90 euros to repair a puncture which would cost no more than 30 euros at a garage. When i said i had been ringing all day the reply was we are busy. No sorry, honest explanation or willingness to listen to the inconcenience i had been caused. Had i been able to speak to someone and advised i would be charged i would have found a garage to repair it. I know many people who live on the Costa del Sol and ive contacted them to advise family and friend not to use firefly when hiring a car. AVOID

“BEWARE WITHOUT PREJUDICE ”

★☆☆☆☆

written by lyMeadows400 on 11/03/2017

We returned the car after 4 days - it was not used & in a secure parking place, whilst we were away ( not on the road) we were taken to view properties by estate agents. We did take the car to fill it up to return it, considering that we had only done about 60 kilometres approx. The car took 15 Euros to fill up but it was still accepting fuel. Bearing in mind that thie car was a 1.2 Clio we found this rather excessive! On returning the car the attendant went straight to the passenger side door mirror and noted a slight scratch on the Edge, which was not visible to the human eye the only way you could tell there was a slight scratch was to run your finger along it, so obviously 'very strange'. A rub with som T cut would have erased it. It cost us £105 for a scratch that you could not see. I REITERATE- Do be aware of these facts!!!!!

“Money taken from our account saying there was damage.”

★☆☆☆☆

written by EvaHale165 on 26/01/2017

I would not hire from this company firefly Malaga ever again as they push for their own insurance and if you don't take it they rip you off. We always pay the excess and have it returned when the car is back without damage. When we tried to pay this we were told our credit card was refused even although they had just taken the petrol. We then had to contact our bank who said it should not have happened so I think Firefly did this on purpose. When we retuned the car the rep took six people after me in the queue as they had their insurance and I was told nastily to WAIT. She then went round and round the car and pointed to a small mark and said damage. I took my nail along the mark and it came off but she insisted their was an indentation under her finger. We argued but finally had to sign the document to get away for our plane. We also signed no damage but on arriving home they have taken 200 euros from our account. Needless to say I am furious and will let as many people as posssibe know about this.

“Still an issue with my VISA card”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Raquel277 on 21/12/2016

Rented a car (Sept. 2016) without insurance, checked before the trip, noticed a couple of scratches, took photos, let the keys in the box when I returned from my trip, and... received a 400$+ bill for damages on the car. Called VISA for a contestation. After 2 months, VISA called me back : the company Firefly didn't accept the contestation and sent photos of the car scratches... the same scratches I noticed (with photos) before my trip. Sent them to VISA as a proof, and still waiting. But VISA told me I will have soon some news. Conclusion: If you take a car with scratches, and don't take their insurance, be sure you have a chance to be responsible of the scratches. And how many renters are paying the same scratches ? Hummm

“Rude demanding and aggressive”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Daltont316 on 15/12/2016

On pick up the member of staff demanded that I pay 20 euros a day breakdown and excess insurance - I said I had taken my own insurance out and she said it made no difference - with difficulty I stood my ground and pointed out that they had my credit card details. The woman was rude and aggressive no way to start a short break. In the 30 years of hiring cars I have never had such treatment. I think most people would have backed down in the face of such bullying - the car I got was high miles 80000km and covered in dents and scratches which made the excess insurance all the more ridiculous. Avoid this unscrupulous company

Please, p;ease do NOT use Firefly. Our whole experiance was terrible. Rudeness and bad attitude of staff in the Malaga branch. Money debited from our credit card on our return to the U.K for damage to the vehicle, which did not exist! luckily we had taken pictures of the vehicle on pick up and return. When challenged we were sent pics of a completly different vehicle!!Thankfully our credit card company have refunded the money and are pursuing the case with them...Please stay away from this company

“Avoid being ripped off - go elsewhere”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Matthewswn476 on 31/08/2016

I booked your car through a reputable flight provider along with the fully comprehensive insurance cover that was offered. On arrival I was told a number of things:- 1) I shouldn't have booked through the flight company, but should have booked direct with Firefly. 2)the insurance I had was not acceptable and I would not be given the car unless I bought the fully comprehensive cover from Firefly (another customer in front of me had her contract ripped up which resulted in her breaking down into tears!) 3)if your car broke down whilst I had it, I was not covered unless I bought your insurance and in the event I would have to pay 450euros to recover the car (24hr roadside assistance is apparently covered in your rental!) I booked two cars at the same time (the second for my daughters family) and this also happened to them, so this has cost our family twice. Obviously I complained but Firefly just offered to rip up my contract and not supply a car. I did not want to ruin all our holidays so just paid. BEST ADVICE IS GO TO A MORE REPUTABLE COMPANY - YOU OBVIOUSLY GET WHAT YOU APY FOR. Maybe this is just Malaga, but we aware.

“Rip off merchants”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Coley1981 on 18/08/2016

We booked fire fly through do you Spain.com. We ended up paying double the original quote. We paid extra to take out insurance on booking so we didn't have to pay extra when we got there. On arrival in Spain we were told we had to take out insurance with them again or pay £1000 to cover us. Absolutely shockingly awful service. U truly believe these companies are severely ripping people off. With all the service charges, petrol, insurance etc you end up paying more than double the original price. Beware of these people!

You can get firefly's own 'Super Cover' insurance, that way they won't block your card with the deposit. Their own super cover is anything from about 7 euros per day though, depending on the car size. The deposit is only 'blocked' on the card so no money taken, if you decide not to have their insurance, (unless something is wrong with the car on return, then they can take an amount for that, out of your deposit). We get an excess insurance from questor-insurance.co.uk and this will cover you for the car excess, tyres, windscreen etc and will be a lot cheaper than buying direct from firefly. If you decide to take this option, yes you will have the excess 'blocked' on your card, but you will be covered if anything happens to the car. You will have to claim anything back from questor when you return if this happens. firefly were going to automatically charge me for their super cover until I said we had our own insurance, so bear this in mind if you do decide to get your own excess insurance, as you will have to say no to theirs. firefly's super cover is expensive and doesn't even cover you for loss of car keys, so if it were me, I'd buy a policy before I went and say no to theirs. Regarding the fuel policy, I was charged 22 euros for firefly filling up the car with fuel on collection, even though I brought the car back full..I complained to rentalcars that I booked the car with and got this rip off charge back! Hope this all helps!

firefly are located in the car park at Malaga airport. Go to the car hire rentals down the slope after you collect your bags, then the car park is past all the rental car desks and turn right. firefly are in the corner.
