“Terrible booking”

I have tried to make a booking online and when I got to the payment page was unable to make a payment. When I called, I was told that due to demand, the price had increase - by £300.
I would like to know if anyone else has experienced this.
I made a telephone booking as I needed the flights but have experienced terrible customer services and a chain of mistakes regarding this booking.
Is it legal to increase a price during an online booking as this does not seem right. This does not happen when booking concert tickets or any thing else that I am aware of.
I would not use Thomas Cook again.
