I agree with another person that flying with China Airlines is not worth the cheap price. I was flying from Manila to Dallas which included a change of airlines at LAX. Our flight out of Hong Kong was delayed because the ATC ( Air Traffic Controller ) allegedly would not give us a runway to use. At least this is the excuse that we were given. This caused our flight to be late into LAX which caused me to miss my connecting flight to Dallas. So I had to change airlines. It was either this or spend the night in LAX. Now I have to fly into DFW at midnight instead of Love Field at 10 p.m. For those of you that have ever taken off or landed at either field you know the significance of what I am saying. These people are completely incompetent. You would be better off taking a Tramp Steamer. I will never fly with any Chinese airlines anywhere at any price.

“Happy Traveler!”

★★★★★

written by on 11/02/2015

It was my first time flying with China Airlines and I didn't expect much as I flew with other Chinese airlines before but didn't like them. However, I was impressed with flight crews and their services. China Airlines has newer planes, everything was neat, clean and foods were good to my taste. The airlines offered the family couch seats to me and my friend at no cost from LAX to Taipei. My experience was great and I would travel with China Airlines again.

My experience also.....I echo all that you wrote. And if you ever have the chance to enjoy the ambiance of their lounge in Taipei it is well worth doing.

The staff of the China Airlines office in Bangkok were outstandingly helpful to me.

“Great Flight with China Airlines”

★★★★★

written by AliyaMcHugh on 29/10/2014

Recently a friend and I flew With China Airlines from Los Angeles, California to Taipei, Taiwan and to Singapore and finally to Surabaya, Indonesia. Our flight with China Airlines was great. Their staff was friendly, courteous, accomodating and very professional. Their aircraft seemed to be clean, well-maintained, and modern. The meals we had on board were good and the crew was ourstanding. It was my first time to fly with China Airlines and I would certainly fly with them again. Their prices are comparable to other airlines and in many cases less expensive. It was one of the best airlines I have flown with.

“Think twice!!! Cheap but I willing to pay more for...”

written by Wassana on 27/04/2014

Trip from Thailand to San Francisco 4/24. It was worst experience ever and NEVER use China Airline AGAIN even it's cheaper. TRUST me, its not worth it for the service.I am willing to pay more to other airlines. China Airline is unreliable, poor management, doesn't want to clarifify or take proper responsibility, unprofessional. The flight got delayed from bkk for 3hrs(I think they do on purpose, I heard staff talking in another laugage), I was concerned about connecting flight bacause originally only 2 hrs layover in Taiwan.but staff said they will wait for us. When we arrived Taiwan. We arrived Taiwan around 1 am but The plane has left so around 10 of us put to local hotel wait for the flight for 11.00 am ( not direct flight ,will layover in Japan). It was nice that they paid for taxi and hotel but TRUST me they don't explain, when I got there they just said where is your passport , here your local hotel , here is your next flight, we have to ask question by questio. It takes over hour until we all understand some.(why they just have one person explain all of us, it was so frustrated the way they handle, I feel so bad for the lady with her baby and her English not that good. Next morning the airline to us that they can take 5 seats only and all the rest need to wait for tonight. We have to layover 24hr in there, they took my passport whatever reason what of course China Airline DON'T explain!! At the hotel they have free half day tour but u don't have passport (if i know i could write down passsport#) so have to stuck there. After the taxi drop me at the airport they said the flight is changed so they going to put us Eva airline. They walked me Eva airline and stand on the counter for 1 and half hr listen to their language, there are passengers complained and want a refund from them and they refused and tried to explain)It was not a good sign at all I heard one sentence in English that "only 4 persons" . I was thinking I may let my husband go first and I can stay alone here Caz other passengers was old couple and mom and her kid. I told them "i don't need to sit with my husband, we just want to go home" they redponse "we are adjusting, we are adjusting , wait a second" (oh yeah I am standing almost 2 hrs) Finally I able to get a seat from them. *( 1. I was sick by that time, weak body pain, fever on and off , hotel does't have tylenal 2.another friend from LAX , we plan to meet at bkk, who went to the trip with us, got flight canceled and they put her the next flight (almost to late for domestic flight in Thsiland, they should told us earier so we can be prepared 4. On the way back our flight got delayed for 7 hrs again znd they almost put her in hotel if ovet 8 hrs she will need hotel 5.last year we got warning from our friend that China Airline is cheaper but don't take it Caz they will put usin hotel and layover like a day on purpose, we just take it easy because its vacation but TRUST me. It NOT worth it.:(((

I thought it may have just been a bad meal on the way to Bangkok, as soon as I got off the flight, I was straight on the toilet On the way back to Sydney, I didn't think it would happen again, only this time I could feel my tummy was upset, but was too sick and wanted to go home, it was worse, I vomited as well as diarrhoea What the hell is wrong with these people, never again!

“Never again”

written by TangerineFanInLondon on 19/05/2013

We read China airlines fleet had been updated, not here though! Our flight left London at 1-30pm, at 2-30pm 'lunch' was served, at 2-45pm we shutters were pulled down and we were told to go to sleep! Unbelievable!! The 'food' was disgusting, no wonder the traveller behind us had taken their our food, Yuk. Attitude in all the staff who didn't seem to like their job. We enquired about an upgrade b4 takeoff and were told it would be at least £1000, its no wonder that no-one was in business class, apart from the sleeping staff!! NO THANKS

Aircraft cabin was very presentable and nice colours. Legroom was ok and I found the seat extremely comfortable . It must be a cleverly designed seat .the cabin crew were all very pleasant and attentive.the food was excellent and the avod choice was good ,the screens are quite small but good quality picture..the total experience was as good if not better than the middle eastern carriers I have flown with them all but honestly china airlines was the best,I have no negatives at all if you want more comfort go business class otherwise economy doesn't get better than this at any price

I flew from Sydney to Auckland return in March. Both trips we took off on time never had that happen before. Staff efficient some were trainees but they were OK Good legroom. Efficient check in. Cost of $398 was the best around at the time. Give them a go

“Would never fly China Airline again”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 16/03/2013

I would like to express a deep disappointment of how my family was treated today at the Phnom Penh, Cambodia airport by the China Airline staff on February 9, 2013, the eve of Lunar New Year. Even though the flight is probably not even half full, just like flying on Christmas eve anywhere in the US or Europe, the general manager there was giving us an extreme hard time about overweight of carry-on luggage-by a few kilograms for carry-on luggage. I have been flying almost 30 years to over 20 countries in the world and this trip is the 8th trip of my family within one month, NONE of us have ever been treated the way the general manager treated us being extremely difficult about the a few kilogram overweight--for carry-on luggage, for God's sake! How many among us has ever had the carry-on luggage measured to the 10th of a kilogram and being forced to move the weight between a handbag and the carry-on luggage?! It was ridiculous! If the flight is so full, I can somewhat understand why the over-strict policy of 7 kg weight limit for carry-on luggage needs to be enforced, although no airline in the whole world has ever enforced that. Today especially given it is probably a half empty flight, the way the general manager handled the situation, including going out of his way to stop us at the security checkpoint was extremely unpleasant. If China airline is interested in doing business with us only one time or would like to conduct yourself more like a military institution than part of a service industry, then Mr. Liu’s behavior may be acceptable. The extreme way how we were treated today gave us absolutely no incentive to ever fly with China airline again. I cannot express enough how frustrating and disappointed we are to China Airline. I cannot in my good conscience recommend China Airline to any traveler in the world.

“Undependable Airline - NEVER, ever again will I fly it”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 19/01/2013

I took China Airline about 5 years ago. From New Delhi to San Francisco Airport. Someone I know had recommended it because the "benefit" was - you fly from Delhi, get a stop over for one night (hotel and food provided) midway, and reach fresh to San Francisco. I had 3 seats going. On return, the airline would not confirm my return, and I was forced to buy 3 one way fares back. I ended up spending twice the money. I would not even fly China Airline, even if it was a free fare. Also, FYI, while the hotel was okay, the food was very bad, and I am a person who can eat almost any cuisine in the world. The food was just plain - BAD.

“avoid if carrying fragile/valuable luggage”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 18/01/2013

my review pertains specifically to anyone who wants to take fragile luggage with them. I have a viola, which I have always taken with me as hand luggage on every other airline that I have flown on (Cathay, Swiss, Etihad, Emirates, Qantas, easyjet, Thai). It is fragile, the wood finish can be disturbed by temperature extremes, and the case is an ordinary solid case. The lady at the check-in desk from Sydney insisted against all my protestations that it had to be checked in. No reason was given - it was small enough to fit in the overhead compartments, it was not heavy, I could have taken the steel strings off if that was considered a security issue. The supervisor gave me no reasons other than 'its not in my power'. They made me sign a waiver absolving them of responsibility for damage. They assured me it would be handled carefully, and hand delivered to the bulky luggage area, rather than on the carousel. Imagine my horror as I see my instrument drop off the carousel with all the other heavy samsonite cases, I just happened to be near the shute to catch it. Luckily the instrument survived undamaged, it could so have easily been broken. I'm not a professional, and its not a professional instrument, but it is still reasonably expensive (9000 dollars with the bow) and it means a lot to me (I was made to feel small in this by the Sydney check-in lady - 'its hardly a stradivari now is it, most people buy an extra seat for their instrument'). I went to the desk in Frankfurt to register a complaint, an saw an unfortunate man trying to check in an expensive tripod as hand luggage next to me. Rather than having the humiliation and frustration of trying to justify myself to the rude staff, I took the chance to warn him from my experience. I will make a formal complaint to the sydney staff. If this is their attitude towards sensitive and valuable equipment, its only a matter of time before one of their planes malfunctions and drops out of the sky. My final assessment: do not fly with these shitheads

Good review and true in myy experience. But without wishing to diminish your justifiable outrage, I think this is even more important, and bears out what you infer in your penultimate sentence.

“Extra effort”

★★★★★

written by on 29/11/2012

I could not find my passport while waiting for the interview with an Immigration officer in San Francisco Airport on 11/27/2012. Panically, I rushed back to the China Airlines cabin. A China Airlines stewardess was on the way to exit San Francisco Airport. She immediately turned back and helped me to find the passport in the cabin (note: I am not allowed to enter the cabin). While the stewardess was searching for my passport, a male China Airlines officer accompanied me and comforted me. To show my appreciation, I decided to inform China Airlines on what happened. The male officer insisted that he did not help and suggested that if I want to report, I only report the stewardess' effort.

“Awful flight - yikes!”

written by on 28/05/2012

AWFUL, AWFUL experience on China Airlines from Taipei to LA, May 21. My husband is 6ft. 4 inches and when we checked in early in the morning for our flights from Bangkok to Taipei and Taipei to LA we asked the ticket agent to sit us in seats that would accomodate his height. "Oh yes sir. You'll have plenty of room, etc., etc." When we got on the plane we were instead seated in the tightest seats next to the lavatory. When my husband literally couldn't sit down, there was much flurry of activity to find him somewhere he could fit. He was embarassed and naturally we were separated from him for the entire trip - no apology from anyone of course. Ironically, people who checked in after us (we recognized them from the airport) were seated in a front row with leg room. As usual with China Air, much pushing and shoving on board (of course) with no order imposed by the ineffectual cabin crew. Craziness. If China Air flight attendants spent more time taking care of their customers and less time pushing carts of duty-free "face whitening" creams up and down the aisles they may have a few more happy customers. In any case, you have to be under five feet tall to fit your legs in the teeny little seats. My recommendation? If you have to fly China Air - stay home.

“I had my most uncomfortable long haul flight ever with...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by dave cantwell on 16/04/2011

I had my most uncomfortable long haul flight ever with China Airlines. Very cramped but more importantly the seat was completely worn out. The foam was compressed to about an inch thick so protusions on the seat base were making their presence felt. I asked for another seat as 13 hours of sitting on this thing were starting to alarm me. They brought me an equally worn out replacement cushion. Upshot of this was it was extremely uncomfortable and painful and of course any sleep was impossible.
Bottom line, these seats should have been replaced a long time ago and the plane itself was old and shabby.
I will never fly with China Air again, passenger beware, you will be as worn out as their seats for days after your flight.

written by on 14/04/2011

If you only traveling from US to China, china airline might be OK but if you ever want to use your mileage to travel anywhere else, IT IS A NIGHTMARE!
I want to book a flight from SF to Europe. I can't book it with China airline because they don't have such a flight! I have enough mileage to purchase 10 first class tickets and I only want two. I have been over the phone for more than 4 hours, with the credit card company, china airline and ... NO ONE CAN HELP ME! I am so regretting to get their credit card!

Believe it or not, 5 different people told me 5 different things, they can't even tell me how much mileage I have. One told me you only have 3000 when I have more than 200,000!

If you don't have their business card, RUN THE OTHER WAY and save yourself!

London to Taipei and back via Frankfurt due to an unexplained cancellation of my original flight. Cabin crew outbound excellent, addressed by name the entire flight and helpful with drinks and snacks. Any airline would be proud to have such customer focused crew. Both meals only adequate. I suggest to pick the Asian options. Better food on return via Frankfurt, but service poorer. As this is a late night flight appetiser and starter dispensed with completely - they should offer a choice of an express or full dinner service. Overall good value for business. Note that seats not fully flat, but for me comfortable to sleep and rest.

I am a Taiwanese male that traveled with my young son and daughter and we had a horrible experience with China Airline. The kiosk representives at LAX were rude, unattentive, and showed no concern to any of my question i had. If they could treat their own people badly imagine how they'll treat you. The flight attendants are snobby women that dont care about any of your needs. They ran over my foot with their cart and asked me to put my foot away without saying sorry. Please dont fly with China Airline.

The crews (especially the male crews) were very unfriendly and rude. Never greet passengers, never smile and rudely brush me off when I ask questions. Never seen such bad service in any other airlines before. The air-condition in the plane was very very hot. I became sick after the flight. My partner experienced the same thing as me. So this is not only my personal review.

“China Southern ”

★★☆☆☆

written by Lindsayhouse on 20/10/2010

China Southern
- Got taken off plane in Guangzhou and made to run - yes RUN after a hostess who ignored our inquires re luggage (which was NOT transferred till next day) to be dumped at an area where everything was written in Chinese (domestic terminal) Found a young man who spoke English - the Domestics flight was 2 hours late after all that - Flight to Yiwu on 737 not so bad - No entertainment cramped seats.
return to Sydney was made annoying because monitors (only 3 per section in central roof liner and one on each bulk head in our section) were not working and speaker system was also no working - A serious safety issue because the crew announcements in Chinese or English could not be heard. Ie if turbulence was imminent - Chinese transport is usually efficient - As are customs and immigration

★★★★☆

written by traceyf01 on 19/07/2010

cabin crew were friendly and attentive - announcements made in Chinese then English - which was ok - we had 5 meals/snacks on the way out (total 18.3hrs) and the same on the way back - food was excellent - far better than what you get on the shory haul flights to Spain/Greece etc. each passenger had their own tv screen with options of 10 movies, radio, music, games, internet (for a fee) which was great. We were suppied with cushions, blankets and slippers - glad we didn't pay extra for business class - economy was comfortable.
we had an hour delay on the return flight but no major issues - would happily fly with China Airways in the future - their prices are very comparable for Taipei and Bali.
Thanks China Airways.
