“Lemon from hell!!!”

Bought 2003 Free lander se3 new. Countless electrical problems, mainly minor blows fuses regularly. Rear main seal had to be replaced around 20,000 miles. Dealership had nerve enough to ask if I wanted new oil (at a charge)when the RMS was replaced. Rear window gasket leaks and destroyed subwoofer and rusted metal in rear cargo area. Replaced coolant reservoir twice. Replaced coolant fittings and hoses. Thermostat went bad and engine blew head gaskets at 70,000 miles. Thought I would drive this vehicle for twenty plus years. Looks like I will just be stuck with it for that long. A total waste of time money. Should have bought another jeep, but was nostalgic over the land rovers once great reputation. Wish I had known Ford had acquired LR. Ford makes great vehicles, they did not manage their foreign brands very well at all.

Looking on here its apparent that a lot of people havent had a good technician working on there cars or just a cheap job done.I Bought the car with the head gasket gone after a so called mechanic fixed it!This had been done in Gappers garage in Flint north wales by a mechanic who apparently used an airgun to torque up the bolts!!!!!!!!!!!!! on a new head gasket without having the head skimmed!!!!
Anyway head skimmed, pressure tested, valves reground and new multilayer gasket later, cambelt ,waterpump (precautionary measure) and new thermostat all for only £782 kindly done by really nice guy at KVMS Landrover and Volvo specialist in Bretton, Chester and that was it apart from an electric window regulator which was only £120 fitted an absolute bargain.
Only reason for selling was to buy a bigger landrover so now got a disco3 which is fab.

The Land Rover Freelander 1.8EXi 5 door has a good design, drive is pleasant, good 4x4 if you know what you're doing. If you will keep an eye on cooling system, it will last forever. As a must - mount PRRT - thermostat fix from Land Rover, and change head gasket to latest type - MLS with black shim. Having done those two - be sure - it will make no problems again.

A liitle noisy but that was not a problem. I would take another Freelander any day. Have sold mine and on the look out for a replacement. My father in law has bought mine.

Bought the car with a full service history and 112,000km on the clock. Last service was done at 106,000. I still did a full service when I bought it and paid 7,300 Rand. Opted not to have the electric sunroof fixed which would have cost 10,000 Rand. It drove for 1,000km and needed a new catalytic converter for 6,500 Rand. It drove for another 1,000km and the head gasket was blown. Left the car with mechanic, picked it up 42 days later and it had a bust engine - refurbished engine will cost 68,000 Rand. Currently the case is with a lawyer to prepare a lawsuit. Never ever again in my whole life I touch a Land Rover!

written by Kewnet on 01/07/2008

I've owned a 1999 1.8 XEi since January and I've just bitten the bullet and traded it in for a X-Type Jaguar.
Whilst I've had it, the head gasket has blown ( £950), timing belts have gone (x2) ( £400) and now the starter motor is about to give up.... this on a vehicle that has covered a mere 68,000 miles.
To put that in perspective, I also own a 1991 Toyota MR2 GTLimited 2.0 that has covered 160,000 miles..... so far, this has needed (outside normal service)...errr..... 3 sets of tyres and some oil... bit of screenwash now and then! You get the point here I suspect.
So, my advice if you're looking for a soft-roader with 5 seats, reasonable boot and off road capability.... buy anything except a Freelander!
I should point out at this point that I've also owned a number of real Land Rovers... counties/defenders etc and haven't a bad word to say about any of them - fantastic vehicles and well worth a look.

Ideal for a safety very handy in adverse driving conditions. Flooded roads. Safe ride solid vehicle. Good locking system. Lights and electrics. Air conditioning
It's classed as a car and has enough 4 wheel drive to get out of a mess if necessary.

I've owned mine from new (2001) It's had head gasket problems, clutch problems and has leaked since new even though new door seals and a new sunroof have been fitted. Another problem is that water collects in the rear cubby box and causes condensation. Land Rover should be held accountable, their customer service department even admit that there isn't a cure for the head gasket problems and I notice from postings on the internet that water leak problems have started occurring on the new Landrover 2 now. Only buy a Land Rover is you have very deep pockets!

landrover to me have to me built a car on looks and not for driving and should pay back moneys to any person daft enough to buy one. what a crud 4x4 they are and must be the worst designed car that landrover ever built. I had one two weeks trying to sell for my sister and in that time at 58000 miles the tranfer box broke at a cost to replace 1800.oo clutch started to slip rear window kept falling down when on the move. Faulty sunroof and windows these are common faults so keep clear.

I bought this 'heap of rubbish' 3 weeks ago thinking that with it being a land Rover it would go on for ever and would be built to last. I should have read the reviews before buying, I agree with virtually everyone that this is a poor car, in fact I would say it's the worst car I have ever bought. I have owned several Japanese 4x4's and they are so much better in every respect.

“This Land Rover Freelander has been a total nightmare!...”

written by jber55 on 17/07/2007

This Land Rover Freelander has been a total nightmare! I bought it 8 months ago from a dealership and it was running fine. Then is starting overheating recently and become very noisy while running. Turns out my oil pump failed and I need a whole new engine. This car is a complete joke.... I would never buy another land rover in my life. They are made to break.. and thats exactly what they do. Not only are they off the wall expensive to work on..... most of the parts are dealer only. It is going to cost me 10,000 to fix my blown engine. I would not recommend buying this car.

I would advise anyone who is considering buying a Freelander to forget it, as it will cost a fortune in repairs if you do not have a full Landrover warranty. My Freelander is in the garage at the moment, and it has just cost me £1500. I could buy a small runaround for that!

written by JOHNNIK on 11/06/2006

My wife bought the Land Rover Freelander after seeing and driving one, overall I thought it was a good car for what she needed, we are farmers and in earth moving construction. It did nearly a years faultless motoring until, the clutch master cylinder failed,(we have our own workshop). I was staggeredd to find not only could I not get a repair kit (usually around $35 or so) but had to buy the entire set of clucth master cylinder, hydraulic line and slave cylinder at a cost of over $300. Then the head gasket blew at 80,000 kms upon disassembly we found it had been done before we bought it. I found this unusual, it was repaired with no comment from Land Rover on whether this is a common problem, it failed again 5000 kms later I then searched the net and my suspicions were confirmed. The liners are moving in the block from a design fault. The car now seems to be unsaleable even if I can come up with a modification to rectify the gasket problem... NOT HAPPY!!!

written by nfk2 on 03/02/2006

I bought my Land Rover Freelander from a dealer. At first I and my wife loved it and immediately paid £8000 for it, a W reg. After 2 days I realised it loses water and temperature went up to red zone. After taking it to the dealer 5 or 6 times back, and dealer put different new pieces at each time, from changing sensor to headgasket. The dealer decided to put a new engine. After that, in less than two months, the same problem started and this time not only losing water but also a lot of dirts and oil would mixed in the coolant. Dealer decided to change the head cylinder and headgasket again. After less than two weeks, the same problem and also a nw one: shaft started to create problem. Anyway after 14 months of buying this I sold it for half price just to get rid of it. I will never buy a LandRover again.

written by MartinMac on 29/12/2005

I've had my Land Rover Freelander for 3 whole weeks, and on the way to Gatwick the engine blew. It cost me my holiday, flights, car parking, hotel, plus the luxury of getting us home (£150 tow). It cost me £6000 new, so a very expensive mistake. It's in between Christmas and New Year, so looks like beans on toast for January! Before you buy look at all of the forums - search the internet and err on the side of caution!
