I have owned my LWB 3.1 turbo diesel truck for 12 years it has cost me 2 alternators a turbo and a complete exhaust. I have bought a new heavy duty battery 2 years ago and replaced some power steering pipes this year. It has 160 k in kilometres and i bought it at 22 k It is an import the Bighorn but virtually the same as the Trooper I run it during the summer months on a 50/50 oil seed mix with a 2% white spirit mix it works great. I do change the oil every 8-10k as i believe its positive to do so. All round good truck and totally reliable

just got hold of a jackaroo trooper we went from bris to roma to ch towers nq then to townville then bris can't be eny more happer with this4x4 geting ten cents a k did 3,875 ks for $387 not bad i am happy

i have a isuzu 3.1 auto bighorne this is a fantastic 4x4 i have never had any problems with hear she starts every time not bad on fuel a good work horse good off road and very reliable i would recommend to anyone great for towing just all road good 4x4

I bought my 3.1 Trooper last year as a better towing vehicle, was a bit worried about MPG compared to my previous car, but the pros outway the cons
As a towing vehicle, cant fault it, Ive towed up to its max capacity over rough ground and it took it in its stride because of the torque in the engine. Supurb on a family holiday because of the space and comfort and better MPG than the offical figures!!! And very competant off road in mud and snow.
Faults, Brakes stop you but even for a 4x4 they are awful, seems to have a gremlin in the electrics which cause the immobiliser to have a hissy fit from time to time and seems to eat batteries...other than that I cant fault it

There is nothing this vehicle cannot do and nowhere it cannot go. The only thing I would have asked for in the vehicle was a light in the ashtray compartment. They are excellent starters in all conditions. This is the first Isuzu I have owned and would never have anything else. I love the reassuring feeling that if anything in moderation hits me they will come off worse. THESE ARE THE BEST 4 X 4's by far

Excellent for towing, which I do a lot of, LWB is definity more comfortable but just bought a SWB as lower milage. Very reliable and chep to run.
Rear calipers can seize up in wet conditions had to free them out a few times, but with 200,000 miles its a small price to pay.
On my fifth trooper one 2.8 and 4 3.1's cannot complain, kept changing to get one with lower milage, newest one is a SWB Bighorn with 133,000 Km so will do for another2-3 years.....

Mines a Vauxhall Monterey, bought at auction with 100K Miles. I've marked high reliability, however I have to say that coming through Northern Italy, very very hot day she overheated. On closer inspection I saw that one of the rubber pipes behind the intercooler had split. Close enough to the joint to cut and re-fit. Even with teh over heating she was driving like a dream, waited an hour then drobve to services 2 km's. Waited again then refilled but damage done, there was blowing from the overflow, head gasket! Apart from that, she still ran well so hopefully just a new gasket! I would say a pretty indistructable engine, but let down by an old water pipe - part of my repair will be replacing all rubber associated with the engine! I suppose a problem with long lasting engines!
Other plus points, none of the silly big wheel arches so a narrow car. Loads of power, great for towing, lots of room inside and excellent road presence.

The Isuzu Trooper is by far the best 4x4 i have owned and I have had alot of them. The 3.1 td engine has loads of torque and brilliant for towing, it is a proper hefty machine that is indestructable and for the money unbeatable. Would not recommend the later 3.0 diesel as they have had alot of problems but the 3.1 is brilliant and extremely reliable. They are so good I have just bought another one slightly newer. A much better vehicle than the 2.8 TD Shogun I used to have that was far too fragile.

i just bought a 93 isuzu bighorn special lotus edition 3.1d. it's a fantastic bit of kit. it's covered 17000km and the engine sounds fantastic, the bodywork when washed still looks like new with not a sign of rust or damage. it has the auto box which changes effortlessly and smoothly and the overdrive function is perfect for motorway travelling. it's not the fastest 4x4 on the block with 0 to 60 at 16 seconds but you don't really buy a 2 ton wagon for acceleration times. i would definatley reccommend it to any family who needs a seven seater and doesnt want a boring MPV. be different and go wild it's great fun

Bought this vehicle with 1700000kms on it, now has 220000kms and has been hassle free! Good sized interior compared to other 4 cylinder vehicles of same class, suspension "soaks" up the bumps although a little soft for high speed.

Dont go for the Isuzu Trooper 3.0 diesel go for the 3.1. The 3.0 engine may have a design fault which had problems with leaking injectors, diesel fills up the sump and blows up the engine. This problem was rectified in the 3.1 engine. If you have a 3.0 make sure you check the oil level once a week, if its rising then get it sorted. Oil leaks galore, I rarely see one with no oil leaks, gaskets to seals fail so check underneath before you buy.

Absolutely right!
Never, and from my experience, never go for more modern looks over downright reliability. The later 3.0l model that I had the misfortune to own 'enjoyed' a couple of injector failures (500 quid a throw - unless, of course you pay the 1200 or so quid for a full set). The newer models were an exercise from Isuzu in 'how to do just about everything wrong.
The 3.1 I had before that was old, rough around the edges, towed all day if required and never missed a beat going anywhere.
I sold the 3.0l last year in favour of a mondeo estate which is just NOT the same to tow with, this year I may look for an addition to the family in the shape of another old, reliable, wonderful 3.1l Trooper.

I bought my Bighorn Irmscher quite a few months ago simply on the basis that I loved the look of it. Unfortuantely the autobox failed within a few miles of picking it up, refusing to find any gears above 2nd.. I'm not the kind of person to give up easily, so I spent a fair time working out the problem, treating the box with the magical Lucas transmission fix etc. Turns out that the oil cooler was blocked solid, causing out of spec line pressures and overheating. Blew it out, disconnected the slightly faulty throttle sensor and now the car works perfectly. 110000 miles on the clock, and the 3.1 diesel still puts out 32-34 MPG, so overall I couldn't be happier.
On road handling is poor in the bends, but you don't buy one of these for its road manners - it's off road where the car really excels. I've owned Jeeps and Range Rovers in the past, and I'd pick this above both the others for its off road capability, with the Jeep being a hands down winner for on road use.
If you're thinking of buying one of these, I can only advise you to be aware of the possible gearbox problem, as it seems to be a very frequent complaint on owners sites around the world - If you're prepared for the worst (took me round about 3 hours to change the ATF a couple of times and clear out the cooler), then you could find yourself with one of the best 4x4s around.

If you want a real 4x4 that will get you home through, well, pretty much anything, then this is the vehicle. You MUST put decent tyres on it though; don't be one of the idiots who buys a hugely capable off-roader and leaves it afflicted with those ridiculous showroom road tyres. BF Goodrich All Terrain or, if you live on a farm or tow a horsebox through wet fields, BFG Mud Terrain. If you don't want to invest in proper tyres (and that means all FIVE of them), why do you want a 4x4? Go and buy a Mini. Road tyres on a Trooper is an insult.
This is a Mark II Trooper; the Mark I is also a legend, but now very old. Steer clear of the Mark III 3.0 litre common rail engines - they tend to blow up. Isuzu really killed the goose that laid the golden egg when they moved away from the 3.1 TDi Trooper. Focused on competition, they lost sight of the fact that this vehicle was already wiping the floor with the opposition. In many rural areas, the car parks at agricultural gatherings have almost as many Troopers as Landrovers. Parts may be more expensive than a Landrover, but you'll use far less of them.
If buying second hand, UK Isuzu dealerships (the few that are left) will try to sell you a "UK spec" machine and tell you that "grey imports" are risky. This is utter nonsense; buy an import. You will get lower mileage and much better condition. You will have to put up with dealers telling you that you can't get parts because the chassis numbers are different. Just act dumb, point at the part you need replaced and say "I want one that looks like that". Nine times out of ten you can take one off a UK machine in a wreckers yard and it will fit perfectly.
I have bought an imported Irmscher 3.1 TDi SWB and got more extras than a UK Citation at a fraction of the price. If you are in a cold and wintry area, make sure there is a second heavy duty battery fitted in parallel; Troopers are designed to take them, and you will pay through the nose if you pay for it as part of a UK spec 'Winter Pack'. If buying an import in the UK, make sure it has a sump guard. All imports enter the UK through Ireland and are rigorously inspected; as part of this the sump guard is removed to aid the examination - and is usually not replaced. There is no point having a 4x4 without a sump guard, so make it part of your purchase negotiation. Get down on your knees and check!

I am a mechanic and mot tester and have repaired and replaced many engines from the mk3 3.0l diesel. but i have not spent much time on the 3.1l diesel which obviously means great reliability as most of these vehicles are around 15 years old. This review helped put things into perspective thankyou.

My 1998 Isuzu Trooper 4x4 has done 120,000 miles. I've owned it for three years and I change the oil every 3 thousand miles, always use full synthetic, and I never have to add any oil between changes. A great vehicle.

I had a Frontera and it was really poor in my opinion. One of the worst problems was the lack of power. (2.2 litre engine!!!!!!! in something that size).
So, traded it in and bought a 94 Trooper Bighorn from Japan. It has 30,000 miles on the clock. It is a 3.1 litre Turbo Diesel with 7 seats and it rocks.
It carries tons of stuff. Mechanically it is very solid. Maintenance is easy, parts are cheap..... £60 for tyres on 245/70 R16. No problems and had it for a year now. Bags and bags of power, good torque. Everything folds down and over and with all the seats down you could play 5 aside football in the back.
Heavy on the juice but I get about the same mileage as the 2.2 in the Frontera so not complaining - and France is only an hour away and diesel is a third of the price compared to the UK!
I was never into caravans....but hell, i'm going to buy one just to tow it around! This could make a mountain man out of me! Buy one! NOW!

I have taken this car everywhere it has done 247k it has had a new starter fitted and a clutch a service every 25000 and it seems indestructible it is a lwb 1995 m plate 3.1 turbo diesel intercooler and i would recommend it to anyone.

The Trooper (or Holden Jackaroo as we know them in Australia) is a very reliable and capable vehicle particularly with the 3.1 intercooled turbo diesel, but I hope you change engine oil more frequently than 25000 Km. 2500 to 5000 Km is the factory recommendation depending on conditions. Mine has only required an alternator and power steering hose in 162000 Km.

I HAVE A 91 TROOPER WITH OVER 180K MILES THE NOISE IS COMMON ON ALMOST ALL THE TROOPERS FROM 89 TO 92 WITH REAR DISC BRAKES. IF YOU INSTALL AFTER MARKET PADS AND DISKS THE NOISE GOES AWAY. BUT OTHER THAN MAKING NOISE IT POSES NO PROBLEMS.

My 99 Isuzu Trooper replaced a Windstar Van. Added third row seat, dvd player and monitors for the kids. Truck is used as a daily driver, family hauler and off-road truck. Only failures to date are leaking pinion seal at 22k and leaking axle seal at 59k...both replaced under warranty.
