“Gilera 180, its ok, could be better”

★★★☆☆

written by spinnanz on 18/01/2012

First thing first, the main reason I got it was because of its looks, this turns out to be good and bad. The good part is that it looks very good for a scooter and is quite fast for a scooter. The bad part is that it looks so good, it looks like it should go faster than it actually does, so some tend to be disappointed with its performance. Top speed on my DNA180 is just under 120kph. Another thing with looks, is the dash board, it looks very nice but the speed on the speedo is quite hard to read as it constantly goes up and down 1 or 2km when cruising at a set speed. Build quality is ok, not as good as I was expecting and definitely not as good as my Suzuki FX125 scooter. A lot of parts on the DNA tend to go rusty quickly. One thing I do like is the storage in the fake petrol tank, the only bad thing about this is you cant lock your steering and then put your helmet in after you have finished your ride as when the steering is turned, the petrol tank cover cant be lifted up as it hits the handle bars. Reliability is average, mine has done 11,000km and has recently needed a bit of work, new fuel tap, new fork seals, new fuel lines, new spark plug coil. My Suzuki has done 30,000km and has never had ANY work done except oil changes. Fuel consumption I thing is a bit below average, 4L gets me 100km. A small modern European turbo diesel car only uses 5-6L per 100km. All up, it looks good, goes good for what it is but i think you do need to be at least a little mechanically minded to fix problems from time to time. In saying that, I would buy another one, or a Gilera Runner which uses the same engine.

“Gilera DNA 125”

★★★★★

written by on 09/11/2011

I got my DNA as a cheap fun bit of transport for every day so i could use my car just for weekend fun ect, i wasnt expecting much for the £100 i payed. including the mot price and tax i've got less than £200 in the DNA the last owner didnt realy look after it only changing the oil once in the year they owned it knowing this and reading reviews like these i was thinking i'll end up selling it on, but im suprised to say its a great fake bike, it handles realy well its got more torque than a 2 stroke scooter, its been reliable even in wet conditions the only problem i've had is if you leave it untouched for a week then start it the trip re sets itself so i dont know how far im getting to the petrol i put in, but thats just a minor anoyance its better on fuel than my last 2 stroke 50cc. im 12.5 stone and it will still do 60mph. over all a good fake bike and i say that with affection as its more of a bike than a scooter.

“I got an absolute bargain on this bike. £265 as a...”

★★★★★

written by on 02/02/2011

I got an absolute bargain on this bike. £265 as a stolen/recovered bike. £25 for a new ignition/seat lock set and £25 for logbook and I was good to go.
The bike is heavily modified (Malossi 70cc bore kit, 23mm dellorto carburettor, polini variator/rollers, PM tuning "Boost Bottle" and a few other extras. The bike cruises along at 60MPH @ 11,000RPM and holds it for longish journeys (25 miles+).
The acceleration is ridiculous, easily gets clear of cars at the lights.
Easily whips any other 70cc twist and go in my area and is not far off of geared 50s come 70s like the aprillia RS.
Rust IS a problem but with due care and attention this in not a fatal problem.
The wiring was messed up when I got it so I cannot say anything for the reliability. Although I did hear that the rain problem was to do with water getting into the clocks and can be solved with a little silicone sealant.
A circlip popped out which destroyed the cylinder and piston but this IS a Malossi modification so this is no fault of Gilera. Good news is that replacement (taiwanese) pattern bore kits (moulded from malossi by the look of it) can be bought for around £80 and will get you back on the road again.
The handling is great and I often achieve "knee downs" on the roads in my track leathers. A lot of bikers often mistake these for a full size motorcycle and I've had many nods.

All in all a fun bike which has taken a lot of abuse. Ideal for the sixteenagers and adults alike (I'm 6'2" and around 11 stone). I would DEFINATELY recommend to anyone so long as the price is low enough.

5 STARS FOR THE RIDING THRILL

★★☆☆☆

written by on 17/07/2010

this bike was bought for my 16th b - day way back in 2003! used it for about a year then gave up with it... got left in the garage then sold it on eBay in 2007... defiantly the worst bike I ever owned, it broke down so Meany times... spark plucks breaking.. overheating problems... doesn't handle in windy conditions... bad for rust.. get a drip of water on it and the thing would cut out... I also has minor problems with the digital petrol gage it would always tell the petrol was empty when it wasn't...

the only good thing(s) is it was very good on petrol and it was twist and go so i dident have to get used to gears... gelera seem to hold the value well to, it cost 1,600 in 2003 and still sold for just over 800 in 2007 not bad considering some Chinese bike lose half there value in the first year...

i think all the newer (2010) DNAs are just the same... after all the problems i had with mine u would be silly to buy the DNA!

I have one now. The air box was messed. Needed new rollers. Says the tank is empty but its not, i shake the bike and it then tells a true reading. At the moment it judders and cuts out when i let off the throttle. Poor quality bikes.

i have owned my dna for a year and im now frightened of it i had put on a leo vince 70 exhaust a 70cc mhr kit 9 roller super speed variator kit a full circle crankshaft a athena unlimited rev unit and a 21mm dellorto carb with a pm tuning filter. The reason i have become scared of the bike is that problems occured such as back brake locking up and also the front mudguard dug into the front tyre and ripped itself off and the bike is not built correctly as it is all screws however when the dna is working and not broke down i leave all my friends on there peds and it goes like stink!!!

The main problem with this gilera dna scooter is when it is wet. When I take it out in the rain its performance is poor. It slows down and cuts out for some strange reason.

The Gilera DNA Scooter is terrible, just had problem after problem. First I experianced electrical faults, if the bike gets a splash of water on it, it wont work. Then the fly wheel shattered and veriator broke, this cost a fortune. Don't know what went wrong in the end, it set on fire whilst I was riding it, so I had to get rid. Oh but it looked pretty.

The bike is held together with screws instead of nut and bolts, so when you take the fairing off you cant get it back on.

The bike is so badly built that everytime you have a problem, they have to take the engine off to fix it, this gets very expensive.

fun bike, had a kawasaki kh125 2-stroker capable of 90mph with tube frame was fun but handling lacked.
so you have to imagine what i was thinking when i saw the scooter engine and whelbase of the Gilera DNA Scooter and the fact that it is a four stroke,
but i bought with a aftermarket scorpion exhaust no paperwork for 300 pounds.
and i was amased!!!! the supersports frame is light and surprisingly solid, and i got my knee down first try!!!
handles better than a real bike, and sounds great.
you feel as if your riding a 400cc!!!! and you don't look out of place with your mates whom may have bigger bikes!!!
love this bike... won't ever sell her, she's the first thing the italians have got right in a long time!!!!!!!

iv had my Gilera DNA Scooter 50 for 5 weeks now its a 2000 x plate and i love it compared to some reviews on here mine seems a little sluggish about 35 on the flats 60 downhill unfortunately my bike has had a serious problem with transmission at first the front plate would spin and sheer off the teeth (its eaten two plates) then the spring in the starter motor peice came loose and shredded the belt me and my dad finally fixed this after three weeks of faffing then around a week ago my bike seemed very quick would reach 25 at the top of my street (its quite steep and the bike would previously manage 18) i went out for a ride but after 10 minutes the back wheel locked and the engine died i pulled up to kick start it but it was jammed (electric start doesnt work) i pushed the bike home and found out that it has destroyed the piston and barrel i am now waiting on a new one

To be honest I love the bike. I brought it for £230 and had spent £1200 repairing it. I done my CBT last August and since then I've had an overall of about a month usage out of my DNA.

Wicked to ride and very grippy loss of power when stopping at traffic light but solved that problem by leaving it on the littlest revs and then it sets off fine.

I've had my 57 plate Gilera DNA since January. I was impressed with the initial setup of the bike. Unfortunatley the bike was stolen and crashed about four months into having it. It cost £750 for the insurance company to fix and its never been right since. Just not the same. It ran OK for a little while but in the last week or so, the exhaust, starter motor and engine power have all went out the window. The bike only gets around 30 miles per galleon which is pretty poor for the size of then engine and things. Was very reliable upto a few weeks ago as I've said. Turns heads and most people dont believe its a 50cc.
