If you have the chance to use .22 rimfire then go ahead. The .22 LR will give you generally better accuraccy at longer distances with way more knock down power. I use a springer near town so I don't bother the residents nearby. We aren't allowed to silence a powderburner here where I live. For the price of ammo it's hard to beat the performance of a .22LR.

I would suggest an air rifle that can shoot about at least 12 plus ftlbs ME in a .22 cal. that you can handle to produce a 1 inch grouping upto 25 yards or better. Generally a .22 caliber air rifle will need about 600 fps or more with a 14.3 grain pellet IMO.

A .22 long rifle rim fire will produce about 100 to 120 ftlbs ME with an average high velocity cartridge (around 1100 fps or so). So when using an air rifle, you will have to make good headshots on rabbits at a lot closer ranges than a .22LR.

You can always use sub sonic .22LR cartridges they have a ME of around 80 ft/lbs.

I have good luck with sub sonics .22LR at less than 80 yards. I'm not sure if it's just my rifle.....but the subs tend to group significanlty worse after 80 yards. I don't try to hunt past 50 yards with them if I can help it.. Up to 50 yards they are dead on and consistant. Really have a lot of impact at 60 grains.

    12 ftlbs AR 30 yards

.22LR 60-80 yards depending on accuracy
