I've been having an argument with the people I work with as to what qualifies as a sport. I think my arguements are best decided by examples, all comments would be most welcome.
Sports
Cricket - Just a sport, a few people run every now and then.
Motor racing - no running but it's quick and requires skill.
Non Sports
Golf - You should break a sweat in every sport. Golf is just walking with a heavy bag, which most plays get someone else to do for them anyway.
Fishing - Don't even pretend fishing is a sport. Golf is bad because it's just walking, but fishing... just sitting!!! Don't get me wrong I have nothing against fishing as a hobby but no way is it a sport.
Shooting - no running no speed no real physical exercion therefore not a sport.
Showjumping, Ice Skating, Diving - I think you need to have a clearcut winner for it to be a sport. Most goals, first past the finish line etc, Sports should not be dtermined by a judge. While I think this is hard on the likes of diving which take a phenonominal amount of skill it should be an art.
Honoury Sport
Lawn Bowls, a sport for the old (no disrespect to younger players).
I think a sport should in simple involve a test of physical strength, speed, endurance and preferable skill. It should be clear from watching who the winner is without a judge.

Golf is so boring. Sports should be exciting and make you want to cheer. Golf makes me want to hang myself from the showerhead.
What I want to know is, should synchronised swimming be considered a sport? It takes great skill, requires strength and exertion but man is it naff.... -

Having studied A level PE I can tell you that a sport is defined as something with a national governing body, international competition, requiring physical exertion, requiring time and commitment, high level of skill required along with many other factors. It is therefore possible to have varying degrees of 'sport' depending on how many criteria they fill -
