Hey prb
Just wondering if you had to call Kyocera for the "File Number" before they would fix your phone at that place in Markham?
Same problem has just happened to my phone, I've had it for 17 months now.
Also,
How long did it take to fix?
Other then the shipping, did you have to pay for anything else? -

Well I call Kyocera and they informed me that, due to the large numbers of issues with this phone the warranty has been extended for another 6 months.
I was disappointed with the vendor, who did not consider this. They had received a letter on the matter but did not think it applied to my phone.
If you have this problem call Kyocera (they were very helpful)..

Unfortunately I am writing this a little too late, as a new phone (not a Kyocera) has already been purchased. My girlfriend had purchased a Kyocera 5135 and the same message appeared "service required" after 12 months of usage. She went to her service provider and they told her "well a year of usage for a cell phone is a pretty good". Pretty good! That's insane. I have had my cell phone for over 3 years now and I have never had a problem with it. Now that is "pretty good".
Another case that I know of is at my brother's work. The whole company was issued the same phone as previously stated, and on the same day most of the employees' phones quit functioning. Within a week of the first malfunction, all of the phones were claimed useless, costing the company hundreds of dollars.

I can tell you that that phone has a very easy fix.
Service required can mean a series of things:
1) Phone software has become corrupted and needs to be reloaded
2) Preferred Roaming List is out of date
3) Phone needs to be reprogrammed
unfortunately for most these phones have been around for a little while so most people are out of they warranty period.
For canadian customers Kyocera will not fix the phones in their san diego facility for the simple fact that end user will have to pay the customs charges for the phones coming back into the country.
Service providers are responsible to customers for refering them to a a "master repair shop" , there are many set up accross canada. If you don't have success thru them you will have to contact Kyocera for a master repair shop number.
Kyocera has a great support team. However you do have to be ready to deal with Bell because that's where you will be referred to.
You "might" qualify for extended warranty but you have to get the letter thru bell or have bell contact the warranty dept. in San Diego in order to have it done. If you don't meet the conditions for the extended warranty you are kind of pooched.
Please understand that Kyocera will not refund any money or will not repair your equipment. In the event that you have had multiple repairs to your unit (at which i suggest you keep close records of) they might be able to intervene.
Hope this helps -

Well Kyocera did replace my phone and it worked for a while trouble free. Now however the speaker occasionally cuts out. SOmetimes I can recover by flicking the top of the phone, other times I wait for a few hours and it comes back,
Tried dealing with Kyocera and they pointed me to a service centre in Vancouver, BC. I left two messages and the arrogant #$%#$#@ never called back.
Needless to say, once I replace this piece of $ & %* I will send it back to the president of Kyocera with a tube of vaseline...
This will be the last one I own.... -

5135 software has a lot of glitches.... thing is that you get them repaired from the master repair shops and they only give you refurbished models....
Nokia has a history of said problems as well.... -

Same problem. Purchased phone online through Ebay... it's a refurbished phone. Foolish idea on my part. EZAuctions has been very helpful and has offered a complete refund. Good folks! I'll stick to new phones from now on. I could have done a little research and avoided this problem.

Well I solved my problem...I bought a samsung and have been extremly happy with the functionality and reliability.
Funny every Kyocera phone I've owned was a problem.
I had one of the units with the integrated PDA. It would consistently hang and need to be re-ipl'ed.
The 5135 self destructed just after the warranty expired (time bomb????)..was replaced with a refurb which lasted 4 weeks and then died as well.
The support I got from the dealer($60 to check it out and no estimated cost) and Kyocera ( Sorry not our job) was an insult, to be kind, and frankly, I will never buy another Kyocera product again..
BTW taking a hammer to that plastic piece of crap was quite satisfying.... -
