The product is garbage.
It does NOT play mp3 format, it plays mpy format.
Therefore, everything has to have the format changed before it will work. Simply, my purchase was a waste of money, frankly, since my reciept was lost I honestly threw mine in the trash.
(I kept the headphones). Hope this helps. -

I recently (1 month ago)purchased the Lyra RD1071 after returning a more expensive and fancy player. The Lyra connected to my Win2000 (SP3) without any incidents. I made sure to install the necessary driver before I connected the Lyra, despite Win2K's vast library of drivers. I've always stayed away from RCA and similar brands but was definitely surprised with the sound it delivered and value.
Pros: Great Sound (128K MP3's) with each of the pre-defined 5 EQ settings making a significant contribution. The "EZ clip" headphones are weird at first but confortable when you get used to them. It is expandle with SD/MMC. Neoprene armband. And the best of all, the OS recognizes it as a letter drive (drag and drop using windows explorer or even "Send to..."). Comfortable large buttons and display. One AAA battery.
Cons: No backlit display. The rest of the fancy features that this player doesn't have - no recording, no FM tuner, no clever folder management of files, no remote, lack of various displays of memory, no bookmarking... - all these do not interest me because the bottom line for me is hours of portable music/audiobooks with an armband and comfortable buttons. After realizing that I paid extra $130 for fancy displays and buttons, I returned a fancy player and got this Lyra. A point to ponder for all of you who need a gym/jogging companion.

I don't think this unit works with Window ME. Mine works with my two Macs, on HP with XP, but my laptop with ME does not show the unit. Does anyone have any suggestions? -

I just got the player and I think I love it so far. I went to the rca website and did the firmware update and software update so that it can play mp3pro as well as regular mp3 files. I am having the same problem with Musicmatch -- it doesn't recognize it. I updated the plugin but it still doesn't. Does any other mp3 organizer/player work with it well? ITunes doesn't seem to either. I've been just dragging and dropping files onto it but it would be nice to use an organized program. -

At least you seem to be able to see the lyra on your computer to drag and drop files on to it. I cannot even do that.

What kind of computer do you have and operating system? There were a lot of updates I did before I even tried it. I had read some reviews at CNET and did the firmware update and the software update. After a weekend of snowboarding with it -- I love it! It is the coolest little thing. I am using it in my truck, too, with a cassette adapter. I tried the FM wireless gadget but the reception here in the mountains wasn't too good. Let me know what you've tried to get it to work and may be I can help you. I have XP Pro on a Dell 4550.
