Recommended for use in U.S.?

I'm searching for a reliable, single disc player that's essentially plug-and-play without complicated conversion. All I need is region free, PAL to NTSC conversion, and the ability to play some basic formats (VCD, DVD-R, etc.) in the moderate to lower price range. Progressive scan not required. Any consensus or recommendation on what's best with least chance of glitches in conversion and playback? Recommendations on where to buy in the U.S.?
