I guess this is too late but!

buy direct drive decks only never belt drive!

    to test the deck

    1. Put the stobe indicator light on to the platter indicators

    2. set the pitch slider to zero(green light should come on)

    3. check the strobes are not moving when the deck is running. this lets you know if the deck is pitched correctly

move the pitch slider into minus and plus positions and check the strobe moves accordingly

with the mixer just make sure it does what is says and there is not too much crackle or dust in the sliders.

the decks can last for years but most people I know go through mixers quite quickly and as they are cheaper to replace just ensure you get good quality decks as your priority.

    From Berkeley,

    hey lauren,

don't spend any money 'til you have enough for technics, or numark ttx(s) seriously. you may be eager to get a pair of decks to learn, but once you learn you'll wanna sell the pair you have because you'll want better weight and response that you can't get from Citronic Gemini or other turn companies that make belt driven decks.

it's been my experience that people who are eager to learn do end up buying belt driven decks and it actually takes them longer to learn because beatmatching is harder to do on the strength of the fact that one who learns doesn't really learn how to mix but learns to compensate for beltdriven-ness. do i make sense? have you tried mixing on a belt driven deck? there is major lag and it may bog you down, it bogged me down.

there is an arguement that if you learn on naff equipment when you play on great equipment you'll be all the more prepared and when you learn on great equipment you can't do diddly on beltdriven decks. there is some truth to that...and here's my response. when you're learning how to drive you can learn on a piece of naff car, or even a great car if you're lucky enough. manual transmission or automatic. you can go on the highway or local streets w/ passengers or without. but when it comes time to get your license at, im my california case, the DMV (where are you from but the way?) there is a standard before you even get tested. you have to have hours of training by permit. you have to have brake lights and reverse lights and blinkers in working order. your horn has gotta work. and when you finally set off for your driving test you think you've practiced it all, but that's when your instructor requests that you do something you've never done before, beyond the standard.

in my opinion, the standard is technics 1200. you'll be able to go anywhere from there really fast, let's say break neck speed, like on the highway as opposed to local streets. what do you think?

    peace

Best advice I can give you is not to buy anything other than technics 1200s / 1210s.

I have wasted money on belt drive and cheap direct drive decks and I wish I hadn't.

My advice, buy an old set of technics.

Test them by playing two identical records at pitch 0 and checking they stay in time.

Test the motor for dead spots by stopping the rotating deck in all different positions and checking it picks up ok.

Also test the power in the motor by using your identical records, holding them still, releasing at the same point and seeing if they pitch up to speed at the same time.

Ask the person you're buying off if they have been serviced. If they have, then they should be in decent condition.

Also check that the needles are ok, ideally they should not jump out of the groove when you wind the record back and stop it. ALso make sure that the person hasn't just set the anti-skate setting high to stop this and that there isn't too much weight on the deck.

And get the cheapest mixer you can, so long as its got two channels, a decent lightweight fader and the ability to cue records up you'll be fine.

    Hope this helps!
