If you're travelling to the US from the UK DON'T use your UK sim. I was in California last summer and bought a 'pay as you go' type sim card from Cingular Wireless and used that. Much cheaper! Texts back to the UK were 5 cents each (approx 3p), calls to the UK were much cheaper, and calling ahead to hotels, ordering pizza, etc. was charged at the local rate. Would have cost me a fortune if I'd used my UK sim

    Hope this is useful info

    Maz,

I forgot to say that your phone needs to be unlocked first in order to do this. Hope that's not too much of a problem

Did you buy the Pay as you go sim from Cingular Wireless online before you left the UK or when you were in the USA?

David - did you find out the answer regarding unlocking? Does it just mean unlocking one's on personal code do you think? I'd like to know the same for a Sagem MYX-5 as I am also going to the States in August.

    Hi There,

I'm in the US on Cingular KIC (Prepaid) service. You can get a Cingular SIM cheaply through www.ebay.com- I just got a triband phone to use when i come over to the UK in Dec (I'll buy a Virgin PAYG plan), and I researched best prices, etc, and I believe that's the best deal. Your phone does have to be unocked, but from what I hear that's much easier to do in the UK than in the US!
