I'd recommend the Fuji brand as they excell in image quality, value for money and good lucks. The Sony digital cameras don't seem to compete in this market.

How much do you want to spend ?

I am an artist. I use my camera for documenting my work. It is not quite in your price range but I recommend the Sony DSC-R1. It is a 10 megapixel camera with an exellent sensor. It is a bit slow, particularly in the RAW mode but it has an exellent Zeiss lense. Even in 1 megapixel mode this camera will return clear images. It has versatile view finders that allow you to take pictures from truly odd angles. The ability of taking macro images is not great but passable. I am very happy with this camera and I fully recommend it. Like I said, if you are out there shooting wildlife images where timing depends on miliseconds this may not be your camera.
My wife has a Fuji FinePix F10. This pocket camera returns good quality images of 6 megapixels. Most importantly, it has a rechargable battery which will usually last for two to four weeks before needing a recharge. This, in my opinion is a key consideration. You should find this sort of camera for a third of your budget. It is nothing professional but will satisfy all of your family picture needs.

    Just compare camera ratings.

This way, you'll know whether it sucks or not.
