I'd be very surprised if O2 sold tri-band phones to Pay as You Go customers - there's nothing in it for them (you need a contract to use your phone in the States) and tri-band phones are significantly more expensive than non tri-band ones. My 8890 was 200 UKP despite me being on a Vodafone contract... -

I called O2 and they said i had no call bars on my PAYG SIM and that if i was to buy a tri band phone it would work in the states. Hence me looking for a triband sim free phone. -

If you are a serious mobile phone user & interested in reception & clarity, get a Motorola V60i & don't waste your time on a Nokia game toy. -

I have a Nokia 6310i which is triband. Haven't tried it in US yet but have in New Zealand with an O2 PAYG SIMM and it worked fine. Remember to check with O2 that the SIMM isn't blocked for overseas use. If you are on a contract you may have to get it unblocked which they may not do if you have had the contract less than 3 months, or they may do a credit check before unblocking it. -

I took a SIM free 6310i to the US last summer and it worked perfectly. A top tip for you is to buy a US 'pay as you go' type SIM card when you get over there, rather than use roaming on your UK SIM. I was in California, Las Vegas and New York, and bought a SIM card from Cingular Wireless. Much cheaper costs than a roaming UK SIM, e.g. sending a text to the UK cost 5 cents which is about 3p!! Hope this helps -

I would consider the new Nokia 5100. As well as being tri-band it has a built-in radio and torch which I would find v useful if travelling. It is also pretty shock/dirt/splash resistant so would take a lot of abuse!! Oh yeah, and it works with a the Nokia camera attachment so you can send photo messages to people back home to make them jealous.
