Zafira 2l TDI noisey - plugs?

Took my 2003 Zafira TDO 2l to dealers today - its noisy at higher revs - light stays on for 1st 20 seconds each morning - dealer did diagnostics - said glow plugs needed replaced? Why would this impact as surley they are for helping with starting the car? Dealer said they impact even when car is warm - either way they couldnt get them out and charged me £35 for trying!!!! Satted the noise also coming from bottom end of engine and would have to strip it to find out - will cost hundereds - any suggestions?
