Balance problem

I have a Kenmore direct drive top loader that makes a thumping noise like it is out of balance during the spin cycle. I have checked the level of the machine and it is dead on. I removed the cabinet and checked the Suspension Plate to see if it is aligned properly and it is. I checked the balance ring and find that it is partially filled with liquid as it should be and shows no signs of leaking fluid. I guess the next thing would be to check the Base Pads and Plate Pads. Or, is there something else I need to be looking at?

When I run the machine without cloths in it everything seems to be fine.

I understand that it is best to remove the motor and pump when checking the pads. How does the motor come off?
