The year 1969 marked the beginning of a period of recovery for the 5 Star Hotels in London. More than a million visitors and tourists from foreign lands visited the country. The number of international visitors went up by more than a million. The trend of recovery continued during all these years and by 1977 the arrivals reached nearly a quarter of the British population, indeed a very satisfactory recovery after a period of decline. This phenomenon of recovery is well attested by the figures from various sources.
It can be seen from the published statistics that the share of world arrivals moved up to 0.16 percent in 1969, from 0.13 percent in 1968. The next year it rose to 0.18 percent. In 1971, however, though the actual number of tourist arrivals went up, the share in the world market decreased to 0.14 percent. The decrease is understandable in view of the difficult times. However this decline would not have continued for long, if there was no other adverse situation in the international market.
It remained stagnant at 0.14 percent in 1972, largely due to adverse economic effects. The years of 1973 and 1974 were marked by the energy crisis and due to the subsequent recession he share of the British Isles in the world tourism market remained constant at 0.15 percent.
The British share in the world tourist market started picking up and the years 1976 and 1977 registered a remarkable recovery with regard to foreign exchange earnings, and it is clearer when analyzing the data published in those times. This period also witnessed the mushrooming of 5 star hotels in London. The infrastructure developments of those times helped greatly to improve the revenues from tourism in modern times. Today, both during the peak season and the off season, almost all the prominent 5 star hotels in London report more than 70% occupancy rates.
