Polarizing Filter Size

I'm an absolute novice and have just bought a Nikon D80 with a Nikon DX AF-S Nikkor 18-135mm 1:3.5 5.6 G ED Lens. I purchased a 67mm Polarizing lens for it as the lens cover that came with the camera had 67mm written on the inside of it. However, when I received the polarizing filter I could not get it to fit. Can anyone tell me the correct filter diameter size for this type of lens please. Your assistance is gratefully appreciated.
