The comments above are really helpful and I was wondering if anyone has found themselves in the situation that I have found myself in with Esporta? I joined Esporta Oxford in April 2008 and then in September was offered a job in Sussex which I simply could not refuse (certainly not for the sake of a gym membership!) I was told that I could transfer my membership or if I found that there was not an Esporta nearby then I would be allowed to cancel my membership. I looked in to it and found that the nearest Esporta was in Brighton (30mins- on a good day with no traffic) from my new workplace. I explained all of this to Esporta Oxford in an email and they said that they would get back to me. They didn't, until I called again 3 months later just as I was about to leave Oxford and told them i would cancel my dd. They reposnded very quickly then to say that they had heard from head office that they would not be cancelling my membership as it was deemed perfectly reasonable for me to travel to the Esporta Brighton.

I called "Head Office" and emailed them with the reasons why it was wholly unreasonable to expect me to travel all the way to Brighton to use their facilities. I still did not get a response so I called again and have today been sent a letter saying that they woudl not be cancelling my membership and that I was obliged to continue paying my direct debit and that was their final decision!

I want to cancel my direct debit and tell them to take me to Court and lets see if the Court deems their relocation policy "reasonable", but I do not want my credit ruined. Any suggestions?
