Today our normally reliable washing machine wouldn't spin or empty itself. It is a Candy CNA 166 and is only 2 years and 4 months old. Not really knowing the first thing about washing machines I searched on the net for any help. All I could establish was that our drum belt was ok as the drum still turned. My Wife was more practical and managed to find the manual for the machine.

This isn't in the manual but I suggest turning the power off first, we didn't as it's hard to reach in our case but please do so.

On one page of faultfinding it stated that the filter could be clogged. To get to the filter you just have to remove (pull gentlyish) the panel (plinth) at the front bottom of the machine, its about 4 inches by the width of the machine. There is a small Phillips (cross shaped) screw on a white disc near the left corner, unscrew this. The white disk is so shaped that you can use finger pressure to unscrew it once the screw is removed. BE WARNED that if there is water still in the machine it will start to come out of here when you start unscrewing it. My Wife used a baking tray to slide under the machine to catch the water, needless to say a baking tray doesn't hold much water so this took about half an hour. The manual suggests using the normal drain pipe (the one with a U shape at the end) from the rear, place it as low as possible and the water will drain. Easier said than done to pull the washing machine out of it's home under the worktop!

Having drained the water it was then straightforward to pull out the filter, it's cylindrical and about 2 inches deep. Ours was fairly clogged so we removed the gunk and then pushed the filter back and put the single screw back in. Getting the filter back in was a bit stiff but it did go reasonably easily. We then crossed fingers and lo and behold it worked!!!!! I've suggested to my Wife that she puts "Washing Machine Engineer" on her CV. It was so good to see it work as we were literally planning a long weekend in Paris for about £280 when the machine stopped working, we both saw our Paris weekend disappearing rapidly!

Incidentally the manual recommends cleaning the filter once a month (yeah yeah yeah). The water is soft where we live so we sort of eliminated hard water as a problem before we started.

Hope this saves somebody else from having to buy a new machine.

hi there,im sorry to hear of you troubles,
i own a candy GO1482 and a few months ago it displayed some trouble with "spinning out" properly then just ceased to function at all. i am very disapointed with the durability of this item considering it is only 16months old and dont seem to be getting anywhere with my complaints to the provider Sad
