i have a rat problem and can only catch them in live traps because of wandering pets.
would an hw 40 be up to the job of dispatching them a distance of approx 30cm. any advice gratefully received.
    cheers,
    cptman.

I don't own one, and I'm not really that concerned about humanity to rats. That being said, I believe the pistol only hits 3 pounds or a little less, so I wouldn't use it. Not enough "umph". If you must use a pistol, I'd recomend a moded one. The Diana P5 may do about 5 pounds (they calim more but I haven't read any reports that bear it out). I don't own one of those either.

As I said, if you really want a pistol check here:

30cm? Very Happy should be ok, as long as you can get a head shot from that distance ...

In every case I would never recommend a pistol for shooting any kind of animal.. No matter how close.. I'd say get a Crosman Ratcatcher.. its basically an untra Carbine.. Co2 powered. single shot bolt action.. Great for rats up to 20m

Have you ever read James House's book on co2 guns? He suggests some pistols might be ok for small birds etc. but nothing larger. We have sort of beat this topic to death. Here are some power estimate, though I'd say these require that you be a respectable shot. http://www.beemans.net/field%20use.htm
