coupe starting probs

Had no probs with our 99 S plate 1.6 civic coupe until now, need help. Engine code D16Y7.

Other day on the motorway the tacho stayed at 3000 rpm and the engine man light came on, next the speedo went beserk moving from 0 to 140 + back and forth though actual speed didn't top 60.

Got it home 7 miles and no problem with actual engine performance, switched it off and later tried to move it, not starting.

Plenty of fuel but the plugs are dry, spark is weak and only fires 2 or 3 times then nothing.

The fuel pump relay works ok and it's had 3 replacement, not new, distributors, same fault occuring.

Had a diagnostics machine plugged in to find no fault code even though the engine management light is still on.

Has anyone had this problem and can help out with the next step, or tell me where the tacho diagnostic link is in the car , could it be an inetia switch fault or a specific bad earth point

Right now any help would be great
