can anybody give me a clue as to what the problem with the two ford cougars i have owned in the last two months the first was the 2 litre it started to overfuel lots on and off, whent on fords diagnostics, no problem detected because the problem was intermitant and was not faulty on the test, however he recomended EGR valve ,its had that and air flow meter and still had the problem ,i got rid of that cougar bought another v6 model and that is doing the same?or perhaps the fuel computers are not always accurate ,but on both cars all of a suden it will use 25 miles in the distance of 5 mile on the fuel computer ,any body got a clue ,or had the same problem i would like to give the car a good review but at the moment its not likely -

It sounds like this is a fault with the temperature / choke sensor. I have the same overfuelling problem on my '99 2litre 16v Cougar as a result and diagnostics have confirmed this. Release the fuel pipe and the engine will start, but fuel release is massive (until it's used up) - reconnect the pipe and you'll find that after starting again, with consequent conk-out, if you look below the spark plugs, there'll be a huge amount of fuel, soaking the plugs and dousing your spark. This problem only gets worse the more times you try to start the car, flooding the engine and your car won't start at all. Cold starts are a nightmare when this happens. Possibly, on a slightly different note, if ignition is a problem even when the engines up to temp, you may have water in your fuel; check this by spraying some cleaner inside the carb, and if it starts ok, it's probably bad fuel, requiring drain out, etc.
I realise your original post is rather dated now, but I do hope that other Cougar owners may benefit if they're finding they have a cold-start, or over fuelling problem. (Please note that I have also had my fuel pressure regulator checked and this is fine).
Regards,
Robert.
