Power steering on Renault Clio

This question definitely risks me sounding really stupid but....

Just recently bought my first car, second hand so maintenance is stumping me. I drive a 2003 Renault Clio Dynamique, 3 door. I've been getting funny squeaking type noises as I turn and thought that I perhaps needed to check my steering column fluid. However, I couldn't find it under the bonnet as it wasn't where the handbook said it was. Does this mean I don't have power assisted steering? I thought that would have been a noticeable thing as the last car I drove without power steering required serious muscles! And if I don't have power steering, what is making me creak?
