really long hair! wana curl!..please help!!!

hi
i have incredible long hair that is quite thin...and by long i mean about a metre or a little less..i want to curl it so it looks shorter and i can leave it open but im unsure of what hair tongs to buy which would suit me best..please help!!!
i recently bought a large barrel hair tongs but they were useless and didnt work on my hair plus there took way too long to warm up..any advice appreciated!
