I know nothing!!!!! Help!

Can anyone help?......

My partner is very into photography, he has a Canon EOS 1, and takes photo's semi professionally.

I on the other hand, know nothing about camera's!! - He wants a small compact digital camera to just play about with but obviously his standards are high.

I would like to buy him one for his birthday, but which one? I know he needs it to be high mega pixels, and he needs to be able to save the pictures under different files, jpeg etc, and thats as far as I get, please help, budget max £300.
