Just brought a lightning XL and only fired about 600 pellets through it but the trigger is jerky i.e. doesn't pull back smoothly with a define firing point but pulls back in little jerky movements. Having read how good the trigger action on these rifles is out of the box I wasn't expecting this. Is this something that needs to be worn in?

Also how many pellets need to be fired before the gun really settles down to give consistent accuracy?

The trigger should be nice and smooth straight out of the box. I,m no expert but it sounds like it could be a faulty trigger spring.
Take it to your local gunsmiths, it won't cost you anything under the warranty, good luck,

That sounds strange. My BSA lightening had a smooth trigger from the start. I recommend taking the gun back to where you bought it and if you get any problems, emphasising how much of a difference this makes to the accuracy of the gun. One thing worth mentioning is that BSA recommend users NOT to lubricate the trigger assembly, presumably because it can cause problems if the wrong product is used. On your question about settling the rifle in. It took about 1000 shots until mine was at peak performance. After further testing I have found that my 0.177 rifle far prefers H & N field target trophy pellets to anything else. It performs badly with Crossman Accupels which was a suprise to me as these have always been good in my other rifles (PCPs). RWS pellets were also inconsistent. Bisley Magnums are actually very good, not quite as accurate over range as the H & Ns but very good for squirrels where the extra ooommff from the extra weight is useful for a humane kill. They group well out to about 25yds.
