My male cat is 2 years old and will cry out loud when he is alone at night and also when others are in the room with him. He will also cry during the day. He is fine as long as someone is paying attention to him or stroking him. Is this normal?

Hi -my cat is the same. So long as you are sure he is healthy it sounds like attention seeking. My cat is horrendous and as I type this he is screeching his head off as he has just come in and wants to know where I am! It's much easier to yell and have me find him than for him to waste his energy looking for me. Every time he squawks I go find him cuddle him or give him food, so he's learnt to yell for what he wants - so it's a learnt behaviour - he never uttered a word as a kitten. Some cats are more vocal than others eg: Siamese, but if yours is shouting when others are in the room it sounds like he wants to be the centre of your attention. It all depends on how much noise you can stand as to whether it will be a problem for you - mine is LOUD!!! You can ignore it and only reward him with food etc. when he is quiet and he'll get the idea, but I like my cat 'talking' to me! not always at 4 in the morning though! Very Happy

    Hi,

Thank you so much for responding to my post. I have owned cats all my life and have never had a cat that screeches and squawks at all hours of the day and night. My cat's name is Maximillian and we call him Max for short. At 4 in the morning my cat will start up that horrendous throaty hollering and I will sit straight up in the bed and say to him - "Max, if you don't hush!" or, "Max, if you don't get somewhere and shut up!" and he will get mad, look back at me with his ears pulled back and will go find him somewhere to lay down and plop down - HARD!! He mopes really bad at times. He is such a loving cat ,but at 3 and 4 in the morning - I cannot stand that hollering. Laughing If we close the door to any of the rooms, including the bathroom, Max will have a fit and try to open the door - which he has done several times by hanging on the door knob and turning it until he got it open - squealing like a stuffed pig at the same time. Smile Any other time we will pet Max and love him up when he starts sounding off but, at that time of night - HE CAN FORGET IT!! Laughing
