    What do eyeglasses, football helmets, accordions, caulk, lipstick and gypsum board all have in common?

    If you guessed that they are all paper products, you guessed correctly.

    Even as the role of computers and electronics in our society has rapidly expanded, there is still a need for paper. In fact, not only do we use paper and its bi-products for common things--like the more than 2 billion books, 350 million magazines and 24 billion newspapers that we read each year in America--but also for many other things, including surgical gowns, party hats, shaving cream, liquid soap, and window shades.

    No matter how technologically advanced we become, it is likely that we will always be dependent on paper. However, one thing that technology has changed about paper is the way in which it is made. Today’s pulp and paper mills feature high-tech computer-based operating systems that control gigantic machines--sometimes over two stories high--that run at speeds of over 60 miles per hour and produce hundreds of tons of paper each day. These machines transform wood logs into the pulp and paper used to make tissues, stationary, books, and many other products.

    A whole host of production workers manage and operate these machines. Some machines are operated manually; others are computer-controlled; and still others are operated by a combination of both kinds of controls.

    Although the process is mostly automated, some workers do manual labor like sweeping floors, cleaning machines, changing blades and reels, measuring paper and pulp, and winding paper around reels. For these workers, the work can be physically demanding. Many mills operate 24 hours a day and 365 days a year, with workers putting in 12-hour shifts. That means that days can be very long in this occupation.

    How they spend their time:

    * Monitoring the process and performance of the machines and equipment

    * Meeting safety requirements

    * Generating reports about the machines

    * Making sure the plant floor and machines are clean and in good repair

    * Diagnosing problems and carrying out minor repairs and corrections to machinery and equipment

    * Monitoring and maintaining the quality of the product
